| Position Description | The HBS AI Institute at Harvard Business School is accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow for academic year 2026-2027 to conduct research with the Laboratory for Innovation Science at Harvard (LISH). The Institute brings together academic researchers and practitioners to study how AI reshapes business and organizations. For more information, visit the HBS AI Institute and LISH websites. Research Focus Our research examines workers at the frontier of AI adoption: how people use AI in their work, develop skills and expertise, and adapt tasks and workflows as capabilities advance. We study how human-AI collaboration affects performance and changes organizational architecture, including the division of labor, coordination, decision-making, and the emergence of new organizational forms. We also investigate how entrepreneurs and organizations identify, define, and solve problems. This work uses large-scale, unstructured data to develop and validate problem taxonomies, measure unmet needs, and examine how expertise, technology, and resources shape which problems receive attention. Research combines field experiments with partner organizations, causal inference, and computational analysis of large datasets. Fellows will contribute to study design and implementation, data collection and measurement, analysis, and academic publications. The Postdoctoral Fellow will work under the direct supervision of faculty Principal Investigators (Professors Karim Lakhani and Jacqueline Lane) and the Director of LISH (Dr. Ramona Pop). There are no teaching requirements for this open position. |
| Basic Qualifications | We seek candidates with strong quantitative research skills and expertise in one or more of the following areas: Strategy and Economics: PhD in Strategy, Economics, or a related field, with expertise in causal inference, econometrics, experimental design, or applied microeconomics. Interests in AI, innovation, labor, entrepreneurship, or organizational economics are particularly relevant. Organizational Behavior or Sociology: PhD in Organizational Behavior, Sociology, or a related field, with expertise in organizational theory, work and occupations, social networks, or computational social science. Experience studying technological change, organizational design, or human-AI collaboration is particularly relevant. Computer Science and HCI: PhD in Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction, Information Science, or a related field, with expertise in natural language processing, machine learning, human-AI interaction, or computational social science. Experience applying computational methods to behavioral, organizational, or economic questions is particularly relevant. All candidates should demonstrate rigorous empirical research skills, proficiency in Python, R, Stata, or comparable tools, and a strong publication record or clear potential for high-impact research. We value clear writing, the ability to work independently and collaboratively, and rigorously, reproducible data management and analysis. Particularly relevant experience includes one or more of the following: • Designing, implementing, and analyzing field experiments, including randomization, statistical power, and causal inference. • Building and analyzing large datasets from unstructured sources, including data collection, cleaning, linkage, and reproducible processing pipelines. • Using natural language processing and large language models for information extraction, text classification, embeddings, or clustering, with careful validation of measures and model outputs. A Ph.D. or equivalent degree in management, strategy, economics, organizational behavior, sociology, psychology, computer science, information science, or a related quantitative or social science field is required. PLEASE NOTE: If you have obtained your Ph.D. in the past 12 months you must be able to provide a certificate of completion from the degree-granting institution OR a letter from the institution’s Registrar stating all requirements for the degree have been successfully completed and should verify the date the degree has been conferred. No exceptions. |
