Description:

The Plant Operations / Maintenance Technician is responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient operation, maintenance, and repair of the hospital’s physical plant, mechanical systems, and facility infrastructure. In a Critical Access Hospital setting, this role ensures uninterrupted operation of essential systems that support patient care, safety, and regulatory compliance. The technician performs preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs while responding promptly to facility issues, often working independently or with minimal on-site support.


Key Responsibilities

The Maintenance Technician is responsible for performing a wide range of maintenance, facilities, and technical tasks to ensure the building, grounds, and equipment are kept in safe, functional, and presentable condition. This role requires working knowledge of various trade fundamentals, including general repairs, painting, carpentry, groundskeeping, and basic electrical work. The technician also operates and maintains plant operation equipment such as boilers and chillers.


Major Duties and Responsibilities
  • Performs grounds maintenance including trimming hedges, mowing lawns, trash and weed cleanup, leaf blowing, and other landscaping tasks.
  • Conducts periodic cleaning of windows and outside entrances.
  • Completes assigned work orders in a timely and professional manner.
  • Lubricates equipment according to the Preventative Maintenance Schedule.
  • Inspects, tests, and maintains emergency equipment (generators, fire extinguishers, etc.) per the Preventative Maintenance Schedule.
  • Performs painting and minor carpentry work as required.
  • Maintains power equipment and hand tools in good working condition.
  • Executes minor preventative maintenance tasks as assigned.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to keep all equipment in proper working order, contributing to a safe environment for staff and visitors.
  • May be required to work extended hours or respond to emergencies outside of regular working hours.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Working knowledge of multiple trade fundamentals (carpentry, painting, basic electrical, grounds maintenance, etc.).
  • Ability to operate and maintain various types of plant equipment (boilers, chillers, generators, etc.).
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to read and follow preventative maintenance schedules and work orders.
  • Physical stamina and ability to perform manual labor, including lifting, bending, and working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Reliable and safety-conscious with a strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
Working Conditions
  • This position involves both indoor and outdoor work.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, climb ladders, work in confined spaces, and perform tasks at various heights.
  • Exposure to varying temperatures, noise, and occasional biohazard areas.
Requirements:

Education:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Technical training, vocational school, or apprenticeship in HVAC, electrical, plumbing, or industrial maintenance strongly preferred.

Experience:

  • 2+ years of maintenance experience, preferably in a hospital, healthcare, or critical facility environment.
  • Experience with boilers, generators, and medical gas systems is a plus.

Licenses/Certifications:

  • EPA Section 608 Refrigerant Certification (Type I & II or Universal) preferred.
  • Boiler operator license or other relevant certifications (where required by state).
  • Valid driver’s license.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Strong working knowledge of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and general repair.
  • Ability to read blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals.
  • Familiarity with hospital regulatory requirements (e.g., Joint Commission Environment of Care standards).
  • Basic computer skills for work order systems and documentation.
  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and customer service skills.
