Description:

Position Summary:

The Perkins Loan Account Analyst is responsible for maintaining the financial integrity and accuracy of the institution’s Federal Perkins Loan portfolio. This role performs detailed borrower account analysis, processes financial adjustments, reconciles loan activity to the general ledger and Perkins revolving fund, and prepares financial reports to support institutional and federal compliance requirements.

This position requires strong analytical skills, knowledge of loan accounting principles, and the ability to interpret federal regulations governing the Perkins Loan Program.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Borrower Account Analysis & Adjustments

  • Review and analyze Perkins Loan borrower accounts to identify discrepancies involving principal, interest accrual, late fees, collection costs, and payment applications.
  • Process complex account adjustments, including:
    • Interest recalculations
    • Payment reversals and corrections
    • Deferment and forbearance updates
    • Loan cancellations (employment-based, military, etc.)
    • Rehabilitation and write-off adjustments
    • Ensure all adjustments are fully documented and supported in accordance with the federal regulations and institutional audit standards
    • Coordinate resolution of account discrepancies with third-party servicer or collection agencies

Financial Reporting & Reconciliation

  • Reconcile the Perkins Loan servicing system to the institution's general ledger and revolving fund on monthly and quarterly basis.
  • Prepare and validate financial reports including:
    • Outstanding principal and accrued interest
    • Delinquency and default aging reports
    • Cash receipts and collection activity
    • Cancellation and rehabilitation activity
    • Investigate and resolve variances between servicing reports and accounting systems.
    • Support year-end close processes and assist in preparation of financial statements and required federal reporting
    • Provide documentation and schedules for internal and external audits, including Single Audit support

Compliance & Internal Controls

  • Ensure compliance with Federal Perkins Loan Program regulations and institutional policies
  • Monitor account activity to ensure proper billing, collection due diligence and regulatory timelines are met
  • Maintain audit-ready records for all financial transitions and account adjustments
  • Identify process weaknesses and recommend improvements to strengthen internal controls and reporting accuracy

Data Integrity & Quality Assurance

  • Perform quality reviews of account transactions and portfolio data
  • Monitor trends in delinquency, deferment, forbearance, cancellation and default activity
  • Assist with data validation during systems upgrades or servicing transitions

Minimum Requirements (Education & Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Must be a US Citizen
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Department of Education 6C Security clearance. Requirements as follows:
    • Must NOT be in default on any Federal Student Loans or defaulted loans that are guaranteed by the federal government (typically 270 days past due)
    • Must be a US Citizen
    • Felonies or misdemeanors within the last 7 years could cause an issue in obtaining a security clearance
    • Applicants who have monies in non-medical Collections exceeding $7,500 could also cause an issue in obtaining the required security clearance
  • 2+ years' experience responding to audits, reviews, detail the reconciliation of loan balances and payments
  • 1+ years' experience leading and coaching a team

Preferred Requirements (Education & Experience):

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related fields and/or the equivalent through combination of education and/or experience
  • 5+ years' experience in administrative support leadership role directing and managing teams on the student loan servicing contract or 5+ years' experience executing operational account tasks on the student loan servicing contract
  • 5+ years of financial accounting/reporting and reconciliation experience
  • Demonstrated strength in operational and financial analysis using manual and computerized methods
  • Knowledge of systems and practices is commonly utilized in the occupation of a financial service organization

Minimum Requirements (Knowledge, Skills & Abilities):

  • Knowledge and understanding of the Telephone Consumer Protection Act, Consumer Financial Protection Bureau regulations and applicable state laws and regulations
  • Ability to create presentations and provide training to staff regarding performance
  • Detail oriented with the ability to multi-task
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
  • Expert level knowledge of Microsoft Excel and a minimum of intermediate level knowledge of Microsoft Word and other Microsoft Office applications
  • Ability to read, write and speak fluent, clear English
  • Excellent presentation and facilitation skills
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively at all levels of the organization
  • Ability to adjust quickly to changing business needs
