Job Description

Job Summary:

The OR Support Tech reports directly to the Assistant Patient Care Manager of Surgery, and is delegated assignments by the Patient Care Coordinator. The OR Support Tech is primarily involved in the support aspects of the Operating Room activities. OR Support Tech demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to assist in the care of the patient in the room as directed by the Registered Nurse circulator and/or by the Patient Care Coordinator running the board for the day. The ideal candidate will have strong sense of urgency and accountability, with a notable pride in self and drive for excellence.

Performance Expectations

Patient Care & Clinical Support

  • Provides exceptional patient and coworker experiences by demonstrating Positive Language Principles and the We CARE philosophy in all interactions.
  • Assists with safe patient transfers from stretcher to Operating Room table utilizing appropriate patient safety practices.
  • Assists with extremity positioning and participates in sterile skin preparation as directed.
  • Transports laboratory specimens promptly and accurately following established policies and procedures.
  • Retrieves blood products from the Blood Bank, transports them safely to the Operating Room, and ensures proper storage and labeling.
  • Assists with room turnover by removing soiled linen, trash, and biohazardous waste while preparing the room for the next surgical procedure.
  • Cleans patient stretchers and beds and prepares them with clean gowns for patient transport.
  • Supports anesthesia staff with operational needs, including meal relief assistance as appropriate.

Supply & Environment of Care

  • Maintains adequate inventory of masks, scrub brushes, hats, shoe covers, linen, sterile water, sterile normal saline, stretchers, and beds throughout the Operating Room.
  • Ensures sterile solutions are properly labeled, dated, and readily available for patient care.
  • Collects and transports reusable containers and equipment to Sterile Processing.
  • Maintains clean, organized, and clutter-free hallways and work areas to promote patient and staff safety.
  • Assists in maintaining a clean, efficient, and organized perioperative environment to support surgical workflow.

Communication & Collaboration

  • Demonstrates effective communication with patients, physicians, anesthesia providers, and interdisciplinary team members using Positive Language Principles.
  • Collaborates with the Operating Room team to ensure efficient workflow and timely completion of assigned responsibilities.
  • Exercises sound judgment and professionalism in interactions with physicians and the healthcare team.
  • Responds promptly to overhead pages and departmental requests.
  • Maintains open, respectful, and professional communication with all departments.
  • Provides constructive feedback to the Surgery Patient Care Manager and Director of Surgical Services regarding patient care, workflow, and operational improvement opportunities.

  • Utilizes the department's communication application appropriately and professionally.
  • Refrains from behaviors that negatively impact teamwork, including the spread of rumors or gossip.
  • Works assigned shifts and responds appropriately to staffing or emergency operational needs.

Qualifications:

Education/Skills

High school diploma or equivalent required. Preferred applicants will be pre-med, pre-nursing, pre- surgical tech, or pre-pharmacy.

Work Experience:

None required, but OR experience preferred.

  • None

Additional Certification/Licensure - obtained based on the required timeframe below

  • Basic Life Support
