Job Description

Position: Cashier

Reports to: Shift Leader / Assistant Manager / General Manager

Job Purpose

The Cashier is responsible for providing excellent customer service by accurately processing orders, handling payments, and ensuring a friendly, positive guest experience. This role supports restaurant operations by maintaining cleanliness, following food safety standards, and assisting team members as needed. The Cashier helps uphold WKS and El Pollo Loco brand standards during every guest interaction.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership

  • Maintain a positive, respectful, and cooperative attitude with customers and team members.
  • Support team efforts by assisting where needed and communicating effectively with shift leadership.

Operations Management

  • Accurately take customer orders using the POS system and ensure proper menu item handling.
  • Package food items according to Wendy's standards and verify order accuracy before delivery to the guest.
  • Maintain cleanliness of the front counter, beverage station, dining room, and restrooms as assigned.
  • Restock cups, condiments, napkins, straws, lids, and other supplies throughout the shift.
  • Assist with opening and closing duties, including cleaning equipment, wiping surfaces, and organizing work areas.
  • Follow all food safety, sanitation, and temperature control requirements.

Customer Service

  • Provide friendly, prompt, and accurate service to every customer.
  • Greet customers, answer menu questions, and ensure special requests are handled correctly.
  • Maintain service metrics aligned with WKS and El Pollo Loco standards.
  • Resolve basic customer concerns or escalate issues to a Shift Leader or Manager as needed.
  • Maintain professional communication with customers and coworkers.

Financial Management

  • Accurately process cash, credit, and mobile payments using the POS system.
  • Safeguard cash handling by following company cash policies and procedures.
  • Ensure proper balancing of tills at the beginning and end of shifts, reporting discrepancies to management.

Compliance

  • Follow all company policies, procedures, and safety guidelines.
  • Adhere to timekeeping procedures and notify leadership of any concerns.
  • Comply with all food safety, sanitation, and health regulations.
  • Promptly report any concerns involving harassment, discrimination, retaliation, wage and hour issues, bullying, workplace violence, or safety hazards.

Physical Requirements

  • Standing and walking for extended periods (majority of the shift).
  • Frequent reaching at shoulder level; occasional overhead reach.
  • Frequent bending, stooping, gripping, pinching, writing, and handling products or equipment.
  • Lifting and carrying ranges
  • 0–10 lbs: Frequent (cups, drinks, bags, small product)
  • 11–25 lbs: Occasional–Frequent (boxes, stock items)
  • 26–50 lbs: Occasional with assistance (cases of product, bags of ice)
  • 51–75 lbs: Seldom; team-lift only
  • Pushing/pulling 10–40 lbs occasionally (e.g., supply carts, trash bins).
  • Use of POS systems, headsets, drink stations, and front-counter equipment as permitted by state age requirements.

Work Environment

  • Exposure to heat, cold storage areas, wet/slippery floors, cleaning chemicals, and moderate noise.
  • Work occurs in indoor and outdoor settings, including drive-thru windows and dining room.
  • Fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions and continuous customer interaction.

Cognitive Demands (ADA/FEHA-compliant)

  • Ability to maintain focus and attention in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to multi-task and shift between tasks quickly.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions accurately.
  • Ability to handle guest interactions professionally.

  • Ability to maintain regular and predictable attendance.

Experience Requirements

  • No prior experience required; restaurant or customer service experience preferred.
  • Must meet minimum age requirements as defined by state law.
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Basic communication and customer service skills.
  • Basic cash handling and POS experience preferred but not required.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Reliable transportation and willingness to assist at nearby locations as needed.
