JOB DESCRIPTION

A Lifeguard at Girl Scout Camp has an awesome summer outdoors, being a mentor to campers, and providing fun all day long! Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place. Camp is one of the outlets to make that mission a reality for many campers. A lifeguard is a part of that mission each summer.

As a Lifeguard you will:

  • Supervise the waterfront activities including: swimming, diving, boating, and canoeing.
  • Maintain waterfront equipment.
  • Enforce all waterfront safety standards for campers and staff.
  • Assist with the development of the waterfront program and keep appropriate course records and badge worksheets on individual girls.
  • Participate in unit and camp activities when assigned and as time allows.
  • Observe and supervise camper behavior, identify and respond to hazards, assist campers in emergencies (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury).
  • Teach and promote respect for others: valuing and understanding differences and similarities of campers and staff.
  • Possess the strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers, ensuring their physical and emotional health and safety at all times.
  • Assist in maintaining sanitation, housekeeping, and care of camp grounds, supplies and equipment.
  • Assist with the storing and packing of equipment for safety during and at the end of the season.
  • Inform the Camp Director of day-to-day unit successes and concerns, as well as camper health and other unit issues.
  • Maintain a good rapport with parents and the community.
  • Assist with check-in and check-out procedures.
  • Assist with the opening and closing of the entire camp.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements:

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Believe in the mission of Girl Scouting.
  • Good character, integrity, adaptability, patience, sense of humor, and enthusiasm.
  • Training and/or experience working with children in an outdoor setting.
  • Good time management, organization and communication skills.
  • Ability to accept guidance and supervision and relate to one’s peer group.
  • Ability to keep accurate and detailed records.
  • The entire position description will be carried out under the standard of conduct as outlined in the Personnel Policy Manual for Seasonal & Short-Term Program Staff.
  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Current lifeguard certification.
  • Current certification in standard First Aid or CPR.
  • Experience in a camp situation preferred.
  • Ability to teach and supervise campers and staff.
  • Ability to instruct girls and staff in safe practices.
  • Good judgement in anticipating and preventing accidents.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Walking, standing, bending, stooping, reaching and lifting 20 - 50 pounds.
  • Daily exposure to seasonal weather conditions.

SAFETY REQUIREMENTS

All staff must be familiar with the safety rules and regulations. They must take reasonable steps to ensure their own health and safety, and that of anyone else who may be affected by their actions. They should inform their supervisor of any hazard with which they are not trained.
