Job Description

Support Environmental Planning at One of NASA’s Most Dynamic Flight FacilitiesJoin a team supporting environmental planning and NEPA compliance activities connected to NASA Wallops Flight Facility operations, launch support activities, and mission-driven federal programs.

This role offers the opportunity to work on impactful environmental projects in a unique operational environment where environmental stewardship directly supports innovation, research, and flight operations.

General Description

The Environmental Planner supports environmental planning and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) compliance activities at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC). This role assists with environmental reviews, impact analyses, permitting coordination, and environmental documentation associated with federal projects, facility operations, and mission support activities.

The Environmental Planner collaborates with NASA stakeholders, technical teams, regulatory agencies, and project managers to ensure environmental compliance while supporting NASA’s mission objectives and environmental stewardship commitments.

The Environmental Planner supports NEPA, environmental planning, and environmental noise compliance activities at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center.

How You Will Fulfill Your Mission

  • Support environmental planning and compliance activities in accordance with NEPA, environmental noise requirements, and other applicable federal, state, and local environmental regulations.
  • Prepare and review environmental planning documentation, including Environmental Assessments (EA), Environmental Impact Statements (EIS), categorical exclusions, Executive Order 12114 reports, environmental noise reviews, and related studies.
  • Develop work plans and conduct environmental noise studies, surveys, and analyses in support of NEPA and environmental planning activities; prepare associated technical reports and documentation.
  • Conduct environmental reviews and analyses for proposed projects, operational changes, mission-support activities, and facility operations, including evaluation of environmental impacts, alternatives, mitigation measures, and compliance requirements.
  • Support environmental permitting, regulatory coordination, and environmental compliance efforts.
  • Participate in project planning meetings, site visits, stakeholder discussions, and environmental review activities.
  • Coordinate with project managers, technical staff, and project proponents to gather environmental data, project descriptions, site information, operational details, chemical inventories, and supporting documentation required for environmental reviews.
  • Assist with environmental compliance tracking, documentation management, and maintenance of environmental review records.
  • Support environmental review processes utilizing government-designated environmental systems, databases, and review platforms.
  • Prepare technical reports, meeting summaries, presentations, and supporting documentation.
  • Assist with public outreach activities, stakeholder coordination, and environmental compliance audits as needed.

    Specific Knowledge/Certification Requirements

    Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Planning, Environmental Engineering, Biology, Ecology, or related science/engineering discipline.
  • Minimum 10 years of direct experience supporting environmental planning, NEPA compliance, and environmental regulatory programs.
  • Experience with federal, state, and local environmental regulatory requirements related to environmental planning activities.
  • Experience preparing and supporting Environmental Assessments (EA), Environmental Impact Statements (EIS), environmental reviews, and related environmental planning documentation.
  • Familiarity with environmental noise analysis and environmental impact evaluation.
  • Strong technical writing, coordination, and regulatory interpretation skills.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting federal agencies or government contracts.
  • Experience with NEPA documentation and environmental review processes.
  • Familiarity with environmental permitting and regulatory compliance programs.
  • GIS experience.
  • Experience supporting NASA, DoD, or other federal environmental programs.

  • Work Environment: Work is primarily performed on-site Monday through Friday during designated operational hours in support of NASA Goddard Space Flight Center operations.
  • Travel: A low amount of travel away from office may be required.
