Job Description
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for an Underwater Acoustics Senior Consultant based in the United States.
This senior consulting role sits within a globally connected acoustics and environmental advisory practice focused on marine and offshore development challenges.
You will lead advanced underwater acoustics modelling and assessment work that supports environmental approvals, regulatory compliance, and sustainable marine infrastructure planning.
The role combines technical depth in acoustic physics with applied environmental impact analysis across complex coastal and offshore projects.
You will translate acoustic data and modelling outputs into clear, defensible insights that guide mitigation, monitoring, and decision-making.
Working in a multidisciplinary environment, you will collaborate with engineers, marine biologists, regulators, and clients across diverse geographies.
You will also contribute to innovation in modelling workflows, technical standards, and best practices in underwater noise assessment.
This is a high-impact role where scientific rigor, communication skills, and client-facing leadership are equally essential.
- Lead underwater acoustics modelling and assessment work for offshore and coastal projects, including ports, dredging, offshore energy, subsea cables, and marine infrastructure developments.
- Develop and execute sound propagation and exposure models for continuous and impulsive noise sources, ensuring robust assumptions, sensitivity analysis, and uncertainty quantification.
- Conduct source characterization by reviewing field measurements, literature values, and equipment specifications to define accurate model inputs.
- Process and interpret underwater acoustic datasets, including spectral and time-series analysis, QA/QC checks, and derivation of key metrics.
- Support environmental impact assessments, permitting processes, regulatory submissions, and stakeholder or expert technical engagements.
- Design and support underwater noise monitoring programs, including instrumentation selection, planning, and interpretation of field data where applicable.
- Prepare high-quality technical reports, figures, and presentations suitable for regulatory review, peer assessment, and client decision-making.
- Mentor junior staff, improve modelling workflows, and contribute to the development of standardized tools, templates, and methodologies.
- Support business development activities including proposals, client engagement, and the advancement of underwater acoustics service offerings.
- 5+ years of experience in underwater acoustics, environmental consulting, marine impact assessment, or related offshore environmental fields.
- Degree in engineering, physics, acoustics, ocean engineering, marine science, or a related discipline (Master’s preferred).
- Professional registration (e.g., PE in the US or equivalent), or eligibility to obtain licensure.
- Strong understanding of underwater acoustics principles, including propagation physics, frequency-domain analysis, and acoustic source characterization.
- Knowledge of marine ecology and fauna responses to underwater noise, including behavioral disturbance, masking, and stress-related impacts.
- Experience applying marine environmental impact assessment frameworks for species such as marine mammals, fish, and sea turtles.
- Proficiency in technical tools such as Python and/or MATLAB, GIS (an asset), and Microsoft 365 applications.
- Experience with acoustic modelling tools and numerical methods, including reproducible workflows and sensitivity testing.
- Familiarity with underwater acoustic monitoring programs, including planning, execution oversight, and data analysis.
- Strong technical writing skills with the ability to produce clear, defensible reports for regulatory and peer-review contexts.
- Experience designing mitigation and adaptive management strategies based on acoustic modelling outputs.
- Proven ability to work directly with clients and multidisciplinary teams, balancing regulatory, environmental, and operational constraints.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to translate complex acoustics concepts for non-specialist audiences.
- Experience mentoring junior staff and contributing to team capability development.
- Highly organized, adaptable, and capable of managing multiple projects in a fast-paced consulting environment.
- Competitive compensation package aligned with experience, typically ranging around USD $85,000–$100,000 (or adjusted by location and qualifications).
- Comprehensive health benefits including medical, dental, and vision coverage.
- Full-time permanent position with long-term career development opportunities.
- Flexible and remote working arrangements within the United States, with occasional travel across the Americas.
- Access to global multidisciplinary projects in marine science, engineering, and environmental sustainability.
- Strong focus on professional development, training, and technical advancement.
- Collaborative, international work environment with exposure to leading experts in acoustics and environmental consulting.
