Job Description

EpiC Project Director

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for an EpiC Project Director based in the United States.

The EpiC Project Director provides overall strategic, programmatic, and fiscal leadership for a major global health initiative funded by the U.S. Government and PEPFAR.
The role oversees a complex, internationally focused portfolio spanning HIV, global health security, maternal and child health, malaria, and nutrition.
You will lead the project through its final year of implementation, ensuring results are achieved and activities transition effectively toward compliant closeout by December 2027.
Working within a matrixed structure, you will guide technical and operational teams while maintaining critical relationships with government representatives, partners, donors, and other stakeholders.
The position combines strategic leadership with close oversight of budgets, contractual deliverables, compliance, sub-awards, technical assistance, and organizational risk.
You will also mentor senior team members, strengthen collaboration, and foster a safe, equitable, and high-performing working environment.
This is an opportunity to shape the successful completion of a large-scale global health program while influencing outcomes across diverse international settings.

Accountabilities:
  • Lead execution of the overall project work plans and drive achievement of strategic, technical, operational, and programmatic results throughout the final year of implementation.
  • Provide managerial oversight across project activities, ensuring implementation meets high professional standards, contractual commitments, donor expectations, organizational policies, and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Direct project closeout activities and, where applicable, oversee the smooth transition of activities to other mechanisms while ensuring that contractual, financial, operational, and compliance obligations are fully addressed.
  • Ensure timely and complete submission of contractual deliverables, performance information, success stories, financial documentation, and responses to donor requests.
  • Oversee technical assistance and administrative support activities, ensuring that resources are coordinated effectively and that project priorities remain aligned with approved objectives and work plans.
  • Manage the closeout of subcontracts and sub-grants in accordance with U.S. Government requirements, organizational policies, and applicable procedures, including addressing financial reporting issues, modifications, compliance matters, disputes, and audit findings.
  • Work closely with finance leadership to oversee project financial management systems, monitor expenditures against approved budgets, maintain compliance with donor and organizational requirements, and ensure financial deliverables are submitted accurately and on time.
  • Supervise, mentor, motivate, and develop project team members during the final year, providing performance management, coaching, professional development, feedback, and career support.
  • Promote and maintain a safe, equitable, respectful, and harassment- and violence-free working environment while supporting appropriate safeguarding systems for project participants.
  • Strengthen team cohesion and collaboration, recognizing the particular challenges and sensitivities associated with project closeout and maintaining focus on successful completion.
  • Oversee implementation of personnel policies and ensure that relevant policies, procedures, expectations, and standards are clearly communicated and consistently followed.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for the Department of State Grants Officer Representative, delegating responsibilities appropriately while maintaining accountability for project-level communication and delivery.
  • Ensure effective communication across the project and with internal and external stakeholders, while maintaining a broad network of partners and representing the project on relevant steering, advisory, and coordination groups.
  • Identify portfolio risks, constraints, and operational challenges, recommend corrective actions, and make informed decisions that align project objectives with broader organizational goals.
Requirements
  • Bring typically 15+ years of relevant experience applying project management principles and practices, including at least 10 years of strategic leadership and/or management experience.
  • Have at least 5 years of experience serving as a Chief of Party, Principal Investigator, Project Director, or in a comparable senior leadership capacity on U.S. Government-funded global health projects.
  • Hold a Master’s degree or international equivalent in a relevant discipline such as health, communication and social marketing, economic development, education, nutrition, research, technology, youth development, or a related field.
  • Demonstrate strong knowledge of U.S. Government rules, regulations, policies, and compliance requirements relevant to international development and non-governmental organizations.
  • Bring demonstrated experience managing and implementing complex, multi-sector projects with international scope, including strategic planning, resource coordination, staff development, and organizational capacity building.
  • Have proven experience successfully closing out U.S. Government-funded projects, with multi-country or global project closeout experience strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrate experience working within an NGO or comparable international development environment and navigating complex stakeholder, funding, compliance, and operational requirements.
  • Bring experience operating in insecure or challenging environments and demonstrate the judgment, adaptability, diplomacy, and resilience required to manage complex international programs.
  • Demonstrate excellent project management, organizational, time-management, and multitasking skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities while maintaining strong attention to results and compliance.
  • Have strong analytical, critical-thinking, problem-solving, negotiation, and consultative skills, with the ability to identify risks, assess constraints, develop solutions, and make sound decisions.
  • Demonstrate exceptional written, verbal, public relations, policy development, and diplomatic communication skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate effectively across organizational levels and cultures.
  • Be capable of building productive relationships with local communities, government officials, UN representatives, donors, international partners, and other stakeholders.
  • Demonstrate the ability to motivate teams, strengthen collaboration, take initiative, adapt to new approaches, and maintain an entrepreneurial, results-oriented mindset.
  • Be fluent in spoken and written English; fluency in an additional language such as French, Spanish, or Portuguese is an advantage.
  • Project Management certification is preferred.
  • Be comfortable working extensively with Microsoft Office 365, SharePoint, Teams, Zoom, Skype, and standard remote-work and communication technologies.
  • Be able to work effectively in a remote environment and accommodate approximately 10%–25% travel as required by the project.
