Mechanical Systems Design Engineer – Low Voltage Switchgear

Location: Marietta, OH
Employment Type: Direct Hire
Compensation: Starting at $90,000+ annually (based on experience and technical background)

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Systems Design Engineer to support the development of low-voltage power distribution equipment, including switchgear assemblies designed to UL 891 standards. This role focuses on producing detailed, manufacturable mechanical designs while coordinating closely with electrical engineering and production teams.

This is a hands-on engineering position ideal for candidates with prior switchgear design experience, strong CAD skills, and a solid understanding of fabrication and assembly processes.

Core Responsibilities
Engineering Design & Product Development
  • Develop mechanical layouts and detailed designs for low-voltage switchgear assemblies in accordance with UL 891 requirements
  • Design enclosure systems, structural supports, breaker mounting arrangements, and cable management solutions
  • Generate fabrication packages including general arrangement drawings, sheet metal details, weldments, and bills of materials
  • Ensure designs are accurate, manufacturable, and aligned with project specifications
Technical Coordination & Design Review
  • Collaborate with electrical engineering teams to integrate mechanical and electrical system requirements
  • Support coordination of one-line diagrams, bus configurations, equipment spacing, and cable routing considerations
  • Participate in design reviews to address accessibility, interference, thermal management, and maintainability concerns
  • Verify compliance with applicable standards, manufacturing capabilities, and internal engineering practices
Manufacturing & Production Support
  • Apply design-for-manufacturing (DFM) and design-for-assembly (DFA) principles during product development
  • Provide engineering support during fabrication, assembly, testing, and inspection activities
  • Assist with troubleshooting production issues and implementing process improvements
  • Contribute to value engineering and cost-reduction initiatives
Project Ownership & Documentation
  • Manage engineering deliverables within project schedules and production timelines
  • Maintain organized engineering documentation, drawing revisions, and release records
  • Support occasional travel for project coordination, supplier interaction, or production support as needed
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent hands-on engineering experience
  • 3–8+ years of experience designing low-voltage switchgear systems
  • Direct experience with UL 891 switchgear design is required
  • Proven ability to independently develop designs from concept through manufacturing release
Technical Knowledge

Strong understanding of:

  • Switchgear enclosure and structural design
  • Breaker integration and compartmentalization methods
  • Bus spacing, separation, and clearance requirements
  • Cable entry, routing, and service accessibility
  • Thermal management, ventilation, and arc containment concepts
  • UL compliance documentation and inspection processes
Software & Technical Skills
  • Proficiency with CAD platforms such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or Inventor
  • Strong knowledge of sheet metal fabrication and welded assembly design
  • Excellent attention to detail and engineering documentation practices
  • Effective communication and cross-functional collaboration skills
Performance Expectations
  • Deliver compliant, accurate, and production-ready designs within established timelines
  • Support smooth transition from engineering through manufacturing with minimal revisions
  • Maintain strong coordination with engineering, production, and project teams
  • Take ownership of assigned projects while upholding quality, compliance, and regulatory standards

Why Consider This Opportunity?

This role offers the opportunity to contribute to complex electrical distribution equipment projects within a technically focused manufacturing environment. It is an excellent fit for engineers who enjoy hands-on mechanical design, collaborative problem solving, and developing practical engineering solutions for production applications.
