This role is focused on ensuring high performance, scalability, and reliability across mission-critical database systems supporting advanced clinical, analytical, and research workloads. The position plays a key role in optimizing relational database platforms across both cloud and on-prem environments, with a strong emphasis on performance engineering, automation, and operational excellence. It requires deep expertise in tuning complex database systems, diagnosing bottlenecks, and improving overall system efficiency at scale. The engineer will also contribute to building robust high-availability and disaster recovery strategies to ensure business continuity for critical healthcare applications. Working within a collaborative DevOps and data ecosystem, the role interfaces closely with engineering, cloud, and security teams. This is a high-impact position in a regulated environment where reliability, compliance, and precision are essential.
- Design, optimize, and maintain high-performance MySQL, PostgreSQL, Aurora, and RDS database systems across AWS and on-prem environments
- Perform advanced performance tuning including query optimization, indexing strategies, schema design improvements, and execution plan analysis
- Diagnose and resolve complex performance bottlenecks across CPU, memory, storage, I/O, and replication layers
- Architect, implement, and maintain high-availability and disaster recovery solutions, including PITR, cross-region failover, and backup strategies
- Automate database provisioning, patching, monitoring, backups, and non-production data refresh using Infrastructure as Code and scripting tools
- Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines for database schema changes, version control, and compliance workflows
- Monitor system performance using observability tools such as CloudWatch, Datadog, Prometheus, and Grafana
- Conduct capacity planning, workload analysis, and cost optimization for cloud database services
- Collaborate with engineering teams to optimize SQL queries, data access patterns, and database usage best practices
- Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements including SOX and HIPAA for data security, encryption, and auditing
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field
- 10+ years of experience as a DBA or performance-focused database engineer in large-scale environments
- 8+ years of hands-on experience with MySQL, PostgreSQL, and AWS RDS/Aurora
- Strong expertise in SQL performance tuning, indexing, schema optimization, and execution plan analysis
- Experience working in cloud environments such as AWS, Azure, or GCP
- Proficiency in Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform or CloudFormation
- Strong scripting skills in Python or Bash for automation and operational tooling
- Deep understanding of database internals including replication, locking mechanisms, and storage engines
- Experience designing and operating high-availability and disaster recovery architectures
- Familiarity with observability and monitoring platforms such as Datadog, Prometheus, Grafana, or equivalent
- Knowledge of regulated environments and compliance frameworks such as HIPAA and SOX
