The Executive Managing Editor oversees daily operations of all aspects for selected JACC Specialty Journals, seeking editorial and production efficiencies and synergies between publishing efforts of all JACC journals. This includes collaborating with key member leaders of JACC journals, providing guidance and direction to meet editorial and business needs. The Executive Managing Editor oversees the planning of outreach events for selected JACC Specialty Journals. The Executive Managing Editor manages staff and contractors involved in the submission and the peer review process for selected JACC Specialty Journals, ensuring best practices are followed consistently across all journals, enabling a stable and accessible platform for all users.


Responsibilities


  • Lead the team responsible for selected JACC Specialty Journals in achieving long-term strategic objectives by overseeing daily operations, creating opportunities to increase collaboration and team performance, and ensuring the ongoing coaching and development of team members.
  • Manage daily operations of the editorial team and staff of selected JACC Specialty Journals. This includes guiding and supporting the editorial selection process, orienting and advising volunteer editors about policy matters, providing logistical support for the review process, and supporting the CME/MOC process for appropriate papers.
  • Directly supervise Managing Editors and Editorial Assistants selected JACC Specialty Journals, to oversee relationship with editors, production schedule, and preparation of materials for publication.
  • Provide guidance and coordination with ACC’s publishing partner, Elsevier, to ensure smooth and timely production of manuscripts for selected JACC Specialty Journals.
  • Oversee selected JACC Specialty Journal Editorial Boards and Global Advisory Boards—with specific collaboration with the Editors-in-Chief—to execute on journals’ strategic initiatives and create alignment with ACC’s Strategic Plan.
  • Analyze performance of editors, reviewers, and content for selected JACC Specialty Journals. Provide quarterly reports to member leaders on journals’ performance on key metrics; provide monthly reports to Editors-in-Chief of key metrics for their individual journals, including media reports; provide to Editor ad-hoc reports as requested.
  • Serve as the Staff Liaison to the Scientific Publications Committee (an ACC Major Operating Committee), which oversees the JACC Journal Editors and peer-reviewing publishing ethical and governance considerations.
  • Oversee yearly awards competition for selected JACC Specialty Journals, including providing nominee papers to appropriate Editors-in-Chief for consideration, notification of winners, and award payments.
  • Oversee in-person and web-streamed digital and social media events for scientific/educational purposes, internationally and domestically.
  • Ensure efficiencies and timeliness of JACC Journals’ Certification (CME/MOC/ECME) activities.
  • Enable strong lines of communication with selected JACC Specialty Journals Editors-in-Chief, supporting and guiding their editorial short-term and long-term goals for each journal, including virtual and in-person meetings.
  • Foster a collaborative environment among selected JACC Specialty Journals Editors-in-Chief to share best practices between journals.
  • Act as a main liaison between the scientific community and selected JACC Specialty Journal editors by fielding questions regarding manuscript status and submission guidelines; pre-submission inquiries; feedback from authors and reviewers; and questions and comments on Journal policies.
  • Act as the main liaison to the online peer-review and submission system vendor for the family of JACC journals. Responsible for overseeing all aspects of the systems’ performance. This includes the ongoing evaluation and upgrading of the system to meet the needs of the primary users.
  • Oversee the planning of outreach events for selected JACC Specialty Journals. Travel to the outreach events, at the direction of the Divisional Vice President, Publishing.
  • Work closely with the Director, Product Management, Digital Publishing, to ensure all selected JACC Specialty Journals’ manuscripts are publishing appropriately and errors are communicated to the digital team in a timely manner.
  • Work with the marketing and communications team to coordinate and optimize the social media for selected JACC Specialty Journals.
  • Work with the Divisional Vice President, Publishing, and the ACC communications team to coordinate and optimize the press, communication, and marketing aspects of selected JACC Specialty Journals.

Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s degree with at least 8 years of experience in peer-reviewed STM publishing, including management experience.
  • Ability to effectively manage a team and contractors in a collaborative, deadline-oriented environment, as well as managing the expectations of editors in a respectful, professional manner.
  • Ability to work on multiple tasks simultaneously, with varied deadlines in a fast-paced editorial/publishing environment.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and administrative skills, with a strong attention to detail.
  • Strong computer skills, with working knowledge of word processing, scheduling, and spreadsheet programs.

Desired:

  • Experience in the medical field; knowledge of the cardiovascular field highly desired.
  • Knowledge of data analytics and reporting.
  • Certification or Master’s degree in Publishing.
  • Some travel may be requested/required.
