About This Position

About the Role:

A trailer mechanic is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, and repairing a wide range of trailer to ensure they are roadworthy and function properly.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Inspecting and troubleshooting: Diagnosing mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues on trailers, including brakes, axles, suspension systems, and electrical components.
  • Repairing and replacing parts: Performing necessary repairs and replacing damaged or worn parts, including panels, lights, brakes, air lines, tires, and suspension components.
  • Preventative maintenance: Change and patch tires
  • Welding and fabrication (optional but a plus): Having the ability to perform welding and fabrication work when needed for repairs on trailer components.
  • Safety and compliance: Ensuring all work adheres to safety protocols, industry standards, and relevant regulations like those from the Department of Transportation (DOT).
  • Documentation: Maintaining accurate records of inspections, repairs, and maintenance activities performed on each trailer.
  • Communication: Interacting with drivers and other staff to diagnose and solve mechanical issues and communicating with customers about repairs and maintenance.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED certificate, and completion of a certificate program or technical training in mechanics and truck repair are often preferred.
  • Some positions may require a minimum of 1-2 years of experience as a trailer mechanic or in a related field.

Technical Knowledge:

  • Strong understanding of trailer systems, including brakes, suspension, electrical systems, hydraulics, and pneumatic systems.
  • Familiarity with various hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment used in trailer maintenance and repair.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and diagrams.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to quality workmanship.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Physical strength and stamina to handle heavy equipment and perform tasks requiring bending, lifting, and kneeling for extended periods.
