LOCATION: 7440 Jim McDowel Road
SCHEDULE: Overnights, Wednesday-Sunday, 10pm-7am, Full-time, includes weekends/holidays. Schedules are subject to change based on shelter needs.
ABOUT GATEWAY WEST SHELTER
Gateway West is the City’s largest shelter and serves an average of 600 people per night, with cold winter nights bringing in more than 700 people. The shelter offers a safe and welcoming environment to men and women experiencing homelessness in Albuquerque. The center is open year-round, offering meals, a warm bed, and secure under-bed storage. Shuttle service is provided daily. Gateway Center provides low, barrier, trauma-informed overnight beds for transition to housing. The shelter provides easy access to services needed for case management, job searching, and other supportive services. Success is an exit to safe, stable housing, and a plan for ongoing support.
HOW WILL YOU MAKE AN IMPACT?
As the Lead Dorm Monitor, you will maintain a safe, clean, and supportive environment within the shelter dormitory while also serving as the supervisor in charge when supervisory staff are not present. Your role will include all Dorm Monitor responsibilities with the addition of providing leadership, shift oversight, and escalation for staff and operations.

- Crisis Intervention: Expertise in recognizing and managing crises effectively, providing immediate support to residents in distress.
- Conflict Resolution: Skilled in mediating disputes among residents and promoting peaceful coexistence.
- Mental Health Awareness: Understanding of mental health challenges and ability to provide support or referrals.
- Cultural Competency: Ability to work respectfully with diverse populations.
- Community Resource Navigation: Knowledge of local resources, services, and programs to assist residents.
- Safety and Compliance: Familiarity with shelter health and safety standards.
- Group Facilitation: Organizing and leading group activities that foster community.
- Trauma-Informed Care: Ensuring services are delivered with compassion, safety, and respect for those impacted by trauma.
- Staff Leadership: Ability to provide direction and mentorship to peers, supporting professional growth.
- Schedule & Shift Management: Skills in ensuring dorm coverage, leading transitions, and maintaining continuity of care.
- Data & Documentation Oversight: Competence in reviewing incident reports, census counts, and logs for accuracy.
- Operational Problem-Solving: Ability to identify issues in real time and act quickly to maintain safe operations.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Act as supervisor in charge during assigned shifts in the absence of a Shelter Supervisor or Shift Supervisor.
- Provide direction, guidance, and mentorship to Dorm Monitors and Intake staff.
- Ensure proper shift coverage, accurate documentation, and smooth transition of information between shifts.
- Review incident reports, census counts, and other documentation for accuracy before escalating to supervisors.
- Provide input on staff performance and operational concerns to Shelter Supervisors/Managers.
- May directly oversee frontline staff.
PRIMARY DUTIES & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Resident Supervision
- Monitor the dormitory area to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents.
- Conduct regular rounds to check on residents and address any concerns or issues that arise.
- Enforce shelter policies and procedures regarding behavior, cleanliness, and safety.
- Night shift responsibilities:
- Announce curfew and ensure residents are inside the dormitory.
- Ensure lights-out and quiet hours are observed.
- Conduct walk-throughs to ensure residents are safe and settled.
Support and Assistance
- Provide emotional support and encouragement to residents, fostering a positive atmosphere.
- Assist residents with basic needs, including referrals to job training, medical care, and housing resources.
- Facilitate conflict resolution among residents and report serious issues to supervisory staff.
Safety and Compliance
- Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, including cleanliness and emergency procedures.
- Report maintenance issues or safety hazards to the Shelter Supervisor.
- Respond appropriately to emergencies, including medical or behavioral crises.
Record Keeping
- Maintain accurate records of resident attendance, incidents, and daily activities.
- Document rule violations or incidents and report them to supervisory staff as needed.
Community Engagement
- Encourage positive interactions among residents and promote a sense of community.
- Organize and facilitate group activities that support social connections among residents.
Additional Lead Duties
- Serve as point of escalation for Dorm Monitors and Intake staff during shifts.
- Provide leadership in crisis situations, ensuring trauma-informed responses are carried out effectively.
- Ensure incident reports and shift logs are properly completed, signed, and communicated.
- Lead shift transition meetings and provide critical updates to ensure continuity of care and operations.
- Assist in coordinating emergency procedures and support operational problem-solving as needed.
- Communicate supply and operational needs directly to supervisors to maintain smooth facility operations.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES
- High School Diploma or equivalent required; some college in social services preferred.
- Minimum 1–2 years of experience in a shelter, residential, or human services setting.
- Strong interpersonal skills with ability to de-escalate conflict and respond to crises.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment and act as shift lead in the absence of a supervisor.
- Understanding of trauma-informed care, homelessness issues, and available community resources.
- Basic computer skills for reporting; HMIS knowledge preferred.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
