Position Summary:
The Bone and Joint Rehabilitation Services (BJRS) Technician is responsible for assisting in multiple aspects of day to day rehabilitation services. The BJRS Technician works in a collaborative model with the Physical Therapists (PTs), Occupational/Hand Therapists (OT/CHTs), Physical Therapy Assistants (PTAs) and other members of the BJRS and Bone and Joint Institute of Tennessee (BJIT) staff members to assist in providing high quality healthcare.
Technicians are responsible for providing therapeutic modalities (ultrasound, electrical stimulation, hot/cold packs, vasopneumatic devices, etc.), administration/clerical assistance, management of linen services, basic equipment maintenance and cleaning, ordering/stocking of rehab supplies, hydrocollator/AED/paraffin bath logs, patient set-up for therapeutic exercise/activity, assistance with patient check-in/out and scheduling, courier duties, and non-skilled assistance with basic exercises. All activity related to patient care must be performed under the direct supervision of a licensed and practicing physical / occupational therapist. Technicians are not allowed to perform any therapy interventions that require clinical decision making/problem solving per the Tennessee State Board of Physical / Occupational Therapy.
In addition, BJRS Technician roles include promoting fitness and wellness and provide a positive patient experience. Technicians are expected to conduct all interventions and communication with compassion, patient centric mindset, all the while being cognizant of ethical / legal guidelines.
Position Requirements:
Formal Education / Training:
1. High school graduate or equivalent.
2. Prior experience as rehabilitation technician is preferred, but not mandatory.
Workplace Experience:
1. Patient Care services within scope of job description and ethical/legal guidelines.
2. Demonstrate ability to deliver positive and professional communication within the workplace.
Equipment and Skills Training:
1. Able to provide rationale for, and safely apply all physical agents/modalities as directed with knowledge of all precautions/contraindications.
2. Able to work within the companies EMR system as needed to accurately and efficiently assist with patient care.
3. Able to work standard scanner/PC/fax, and adjust necessary exercise equipment for patient care activity.
4. Able to provide clear, positive communication, both orally and in writing, with all staff and patents.
5. Able to function effectively as part of the BJIT/BJRS team of physicians, physician assistants, medical assistants, nurse practitioners, technicians, athletic trainers and physical / occupational therapists.
6. Ability to manage multiple and simultaneous responsibilities and to prioritize scheduling of work in a safe manner.
7. Ability to handle sharps and biohazardous materials within safety guidelines.
8. Ability to maintain confidentiality of all medical, financial, and legal information.
9. Ability to complete work assignments accurately and in a timely manner.
10. Ability to handle difficult situations involving patients, physicians, or others in a professional manner.
Physical Environment:
1. Out-patient rehabilitation care in multi-disciplinary team rehabilitation setting
2. May be exposed to risk of blood borne pathogens/diseases.
Physical Effort:
1. Able to communicate clearly in English written and verbally.
2. Prolonged standing, walking for length of work shift.
3. Frequently lifts, positions, transfers, and pushes patients.
4. Frequently moves supplies and equipment requiring moderate physical effort (lift/carry/push/pull up to 50 lbs.).
5. Full mobility of limbs and trunk, and full manual dexterity and mobility.
6. Frequent reaching, bending, kneeling, and crouching.
7. Occasionally removes or replaces supplies or equipment weighing up to 25 lbs. from locations at or above shoulder level.
8. Lift and / or carry patients with necessary assistance / assistive devices in case of emergency evacuation.
Key Results:
Able to properly and safely perform implementation of all required physical agents under direct supervision of therapist.
Demonstrates knowledge and ability to supervise therapeutic exercises/activity in a safe manner as directed by therapist.
Able to effectively manage infection control and cleaning duties throughout the work day.
Consults with supervising therapist and all necessary staff members immediately during any ambiguous or emergency situations.
Able to consistently maintain confidentiality of all financial, medical and legal information.
Demonstrates the ability to communicate with patients and families in establishing favorable attitudes/relationships and motivation toward the rehabilitation process.
Participates in the orientation and skill development of new team members and therapy students.
Performs timely, thorough, and complete documentation of all modality and AED log books, supply ordering communications.
Maintains work areas and personal appearance in a way that reflects professionalism and demonstrates cleanliness, orderliness, and safety.
Participates in activities that improve department effectiveness, processes, communication, and/or image in the organization. This includes attending 75% of all staff/departmental meetings.
Ability to manage multiple and simultaneous job responsibilities in a professional, calm, and safe manner.
Enhances BJRS department and BJIT organization reputation by accepting ownership for all new and different requests; exploring opportunities to create improved work flow and customer experience.
