The City of Vacaville invites applications for the position of Fire Prevention Specialist in our Fire Department. Currently, we have one (1) full-time vacancy to fill. This recruitment will also establish an eligibility list to be used for future vacancies in this classification that may occur over the next 12-month period.
The Fire Prevention Specialist performs fire inspections, investigates code violations, and supports public education and outreach on fire safety. The role ensures compliance with fire codes and regulations through site visits, permit issuance and community engagement. This position works independently in the field and requires strong communication and inspection skills.
Some highlights of this position are as follows:
- Conducts fire inspections of buildings, construction sites and special events for compliance with fire codes and safety regulations
- Provides outreach and education to residents and businesses
- Works with other departments from the City and outside of the City on code compliance issues
- Interprets and applies local, state, and federal codes
- Writes reports on findings from inspections and enters inspections into ImageTrend system

The Ideal Candidate:
The ideal candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills to work effectively with all City departments and with all levels of employees, as well as strong oral and written communication skills. The desirable knowledge, skills and abilities include, but are not limited to:
- Knowledge of fire codes and regulations - Familiarity with the California Fire Code, NFPA standards and local fire safety ordinances.
- Skill in conducting inspections – Ability to evaluate buildings, properties and events for fire hazards and code compliance.
- Public speaking and outreach abilities – Capable of delivering fire safety presentations and engaging with the public, businesses and community groups.
- Organizational and recordkeeping skills – Efficient in managing inspection schedules, maintaining accurate reports and processing permits.
Education: Completion of the 12th grade or equivalent. Courses in fire prevention and public education are preferred.
Experience: Two years of experience in fire prevention conducting inspections or other related work. Additional fire service or related experience is desirable.
LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE
Possession of a valid California Class C Driver’s License and a satisfactory driving record are conditions of initial and continued employment.
State Fire Marshal certifications in fire prevention/public education/community risk reduction are desirable.
