About This Position

NATURE AND SCOPE

Reporting to the CSW Team Lead or designate, the Community Support Worker plays a key role in fostering a safe, structured, and supportive environment for clients in recovery. This position is responsible for promoting client engagement in therapeutic programming, supporting daily routines, facilitating recreation and wellness activities, and providing transportation to off-site appointments and recovery-related events.

Working in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team, the Community Support Worker helps ensure continuity of care by supporting individualized treatment plans, modeling healthy coping strategies, and reinforcing program expectations. The CSW contributes to the overall therapeutic milieu by maintaining professional boundaries, promoting a culture of respect and accountability, and encouraging active participation in recovery.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

Recreation Facilitation

  • Plans, organizes, and facilitates a variety of structured and unstructured recreational and wellness-based activities, both on-site and in the community, tailored to client needs and recovery goals.
  • Leads scheduled programming such as mindfulness sessions, wellness walks, and group recreational activities.
  • Transports clients to meetings, medical appointments, community programming, and recovery-focused events.
  • Supports internal and external event coordination, including logistics for movies, guest speakers, educational programming, and group outings.

    • Client Interaction

  • Provides facility tours and orientation to new clients as part of their first day, ensuring they are familiar with the environment, expectations, and daily routine.
  • Communicates daily schedules and upcoming program activities to clients.
  • Engages with clients through supportive conversation, validation, and active listening (non-clinical); refers therapeutic concerns to clinical staff.
  • Notifies the counselor of urgent client concerns requiring immediate clinical intervention.
  • Reports ongoing observations, behaviours, and engagements to the clinical team to support continuity of care.
  • Maintains timely, professional documentation of client interactions and notable observations.
  • Reinforces organization expectations and guidelines with clients, visitors, and families in a respectful and trauma-informed manner.
  • Promotes social connection and community among clients by modeling healthy communication, boundaries, and interpersonal skills.
  • Provides occasional support to intake and transportation services as needed.
  • Monitors client whereabouts and ensures adherence to program expectations and safety protocols.
  • Ensures facility safety by monitoring building access and, on weekends, signing in visitors in accordance with organization procedures.
  • Conducts routine room checks and facility walk-throughs to maintain a safe, clean, and secure environment.
  • Completes accurate and timely notes, incident reports, and shift documentation within the client file database.
  • Maintains clear, professional communication with the interdisciplinary care team.
  • Accurately updates communication logs and other documentation systems to support team continuity.
  • Performs additional duties in support of program and client needs, as assigned.

    • QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

    · Grade twelve diploma (or equivalent).

    · Preference will be given to those with a Social Services Certificate or Diploma.

    · Class five driver’s license with a clear driver’s abstract.

    · Effective written and verbal communication skills.

  • Computer skills including Microsoft Office and Internet Explorer skills.
  • Standard First Aid, CPR and Suicide Intervention Training completed within four months of hire.

    • · A demonstrated interest in recovery coupled with knowledge of the 12-step program or general recovery process.

    · Strong interpersonal, confidentiality and conflict resolution skills.

    · Must provide a valid driver’s license and a current driver’s abstract upon hire.

    · Will be required to obtain a Criminal record Check with Vulnerable sector check upon hiring and every 2 years of employment.

    · All employees are required to complete Naloxone training, along with other mandatory trainings, within their first three months of employment
