About This Position
POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Business Intelligence Intern works as part of the Business Intelligence Department to enable use of actionable data by all IHA business units. The Intern helps integrate, analyze and interpret large datasets to produce reporting and insight, and contributes to the process of modeling, building, validating and documenting an enterprise data warehouse containing many types of healthcare data. The Intern may assist in eliciting requirements from business process owners and end-users to provide reporting and enable self-service data use, participating in discussions and facilitating sessions to gain understanding of how the warehouse and business intelligence can support their departments. The Intern will gain broad healthcare subject matter expertise as it relates to data warehouse design, architecture and development. The Intern will assist in performing SQL queries and ETL development. This position creates analyses, reports, dashboards, documentation and presentations to share findings and insights with business users. The intern will have the opportunity to use SQL Server Management Studio, SSAS, SSRS, Power BI, Python, R, Orange, and other data query/mining/visualization tools.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Assists data integration developers, data analysts and project managers in implementing and supporting major organizational initiatives across departments.
- Utilizes a variety of data sources to meet organizational reporting needs through interactive visualizations, automated reports and ad hoc analyses.
- Works closely with business SMEs to understand and map business needs into data warehouse and ETL design.
- Creates datamarts, reports and dashboards for business end-users in PowerBI.
- Utilizes the Anaconda suite to visualize and mine data and train models for machine learning (Python, R, Orange, etc.).
- Initiates self-guided learning to acquire new skills and identify new technology to support the business.
- Creates clear documentation including specifications, data dictionaries and end-user training materials.
- Assists in data quality analysis in support of an Enterprise Data Warehouse.
- Creates and maintains reports, reusable queries and/or dashboards to improve IHA’s operational reporting capability.
- Looks for ways to use data to support IHA’s Quadruple Aim.
- Keeps up with industrial data technology trends and brings innovative ideas to the organization.
- Assists with other projects and duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree (or current pursuit of a Bachelor’s degree) or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience. Master’s degree (or current pursuit of a Master’s degree) preferred.
CREDENTIALS/LICENSURE: N/A
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE: Data analysis experience in an academic or professional setting experience required. Academic curriculum or professional experience in data warehouse design and development preferred. Experience using advanced Excel functions, Microsoft Access or query tools, and/or statistical analysis software in an academic or professional setting preferred. Experience with SQL, ETL, data visualization, and/or machine learning software preferred.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS (ABILITIES & SKILLS):
- Proficiency in profiling, organizing and presenting data.
- Ability to quickly learn business processes and data analytics and reporting software.
- Understands theory of relational and dimensional database structures, query languages and relationships between entities.
- Ability to assist analysts and developers in implementing and supporting major organizational business intelligence initiatives.
- Excellent communication skills in both written and verbal forms.
- Ability to speak before groups of people, either in-person or virtually.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Ability to work effectively with various levels of organizational members and diverse populations including IHA staff, senior management, site medical directors, division heads, providers, patients, family members, outside customers, vendors, hospitals, and community groups.
- Good organizational and time management skills to effectively juggle multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
- Ability to handle patient and organizational information in a confidential manner.
- Ability to drive to other office/practice sites and meeting and training locations.
- Successful completion of IHA competency-based program within introductory and training period.
MINIMUM PHYSICAL EXPECTATIONS:
- Physical activity that often requires extensive time working on a computer.
- Physical activity that occasionally requires lifting up to 20 lbs.
- Specific vision abilities required include close vision, depth perception, color vision, peripheral vision and the ability to adjust and focus.
- Manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, photocopier, telephone, calculator and other office equipment.
- Must hear and speak well enough to conduct business over the telephone or face to face for long periods of time in English.
MINIMUM ENVIRONMENTAL EXPECTATIONS:
This job operates in a typical office environment which involves frequent interruptions and significant interaction with people which can be stressful at times.
