PAID INTERN POSITION OVERVIEW:
The City of Huntsville paid internship position is an assignment designed to accommodate an internship in a technical, public administration, or business job function. This internship requires that the student be enrolled in a college/university working toward a degree in disciplines such as Accounting, Business, Communications, Computer Science, Criminal Justice, Engineering, Human Resources, Public Administration, Public Relations, Urban Development, Wastewater Design, or related field, or a student who has graduated from college no more than six (6) months prior to placement in the Internship Program. The student will develop public administration acumen and sharpen management skills in operating major functions in a public service environment. Assists in a wide variety of administrative and professional tasks in one of various city departments; provides research assistance, writes reports, and make recommendation on matters under study; gathers, compiles, tabulates and reports statistical data; acquires working knowledge of department practices, procedures, equipment and organization system; interviews and consults with officials, employees and other interested persons or groups on matters related to work assignments. Requires regular and prompt attendance plus the ability to work well with others and work well as a team. Performs related work as required.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
High school diploma from a school accredited by a regional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or GED certificate issued by the appropriate state agency.
Official transcript indicating verification of student college enrollment or diploma received (no more than six (6) months prior to placement in the Internship Program). A 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale) or better cumulative GPA.
Prior work experience, community involvement or participation in extra-curricular activities. Able to perform basic technical and business-related functions. Applicant must be a to work a flexible schedule, including Fridays, and willing to work indoors and outdoors.
Working knowledge of MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook). Knowledge of computers and applicable software. Knowledge of business English, spelling and arithmetic. Knowledge of records management policies, procedures, and processes. Knowledge of office practices, procedures and equipment. Knowledge of filing systems. Knowledge of components, parts, and other equipment in assigned area. Ability to calculate and maintain accurate records; compile and prepare detailed reports. Ability to type on a computer keyboard and applicable software performing data entry and clerical support functions. Ability to set up and manipulate spread sheets. Ability to maintain and use an alphabetical and numerical filing system. Ability to operate computer and applicable software, printer, scanner, paging system, multi-line phone system, calculator, and standard office equipment, while performing essential functions. Ability to disseminate information in a timely and accurate manner. Ability to prioritize and organize work. Ability to work on multiple tasks at one time. Ability to interact with the public and provide information in a polite and efficient manner both in person and on the telephone. Ability to speak clearly and concisely on a telephone.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:Candidates for the paid student internship program must be at least nineteen (19) years of age by the program start date.

Candidates for the paid student internship program must complete the two essay questions below.ESSAY QUESTIONS:
Please respond in 300 to 500 words - shorter submissions will be considered incomplete and those applications will not be considered.
The two essay questions are as follows:
1. Explain your commitment to public service and service to the City of Huntsville. Include an instance when you asserted your leadership in community or civic activity, what you learned, and how you think this internship could further advance your leadership and personal goals in this area.
2. Select your preferred department from the attached list and explain why you are interested in interning with them and what skills or strengths you would contribute.
