Job Description

SCHEDULE: 20 hours/week including team travel

STATUS: Part-Time Hourly; Not Benefit Eligible

DIVISION: Athletics DEPARTMENT: Athletics

REPORTS TO: Head Coach Cheer & Dance

SUMMARY: The Part-Time Head Cheer Coach is responsible for the leadership, development, and administration of a sideline and/or competitive cheer program. This role focuses on: Game Day Atmosphere (supporting Football/Basketball, possible Volleyball/Wrestling), Student Recruitment (meeting specific roster goals), and outreach to the Greater Siouxland Community for Briar Cliff University. (school appearances, civic events, alumni functions)

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  • Program Leadership: Design and lead all practices (typically 2–3 evenings per week). Choreograph routines for timeouts, halftime, and spirit events.
  • Recruitment: Actively identify and recruit prospective student-athletes to meet institutional enrollment goals (typically a roster of 15–25 athletes). This includes high school visits and managing recruiting software.
  • Game Day Management: Supervise the squad at all home football and men’s/women’s basketball games. Coordinate travel for away games or post-season tournaments.
  • Safety & Compliance: Ensure all stunting and tumbling meet USA Cheer and NAIA safety regulations. Maintain current CPR/AED and Risk Management certifications.
  • Administrative Duties: Work closely with the Director of Athletics and Head Dance Coach to manage the program budget, order uniforms/equipment, and monitor the academic eligibility and retention of current athletes.
  • Fundraising: Organize clinics, camps, or community events to supplement the program's operating budget.

Required Qualifications

  • Education: High School Diploma required; Batchelor’s Degree strongly preferred
  • Experience: 2+ years of coaching at the high school, All-Star, or collegiate level.
  • Skills: Proficiency in stunting techniques, choreography, and music selection. Strong "sales" skills for recruiting in a competitive private school market.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with abstract and concrete variables.
