POSITIONOVERVIEW:
The Mercer County Prosecutor's Office is seeking qualified attorneys admitted to practice law in the State of New Jersey to serve as Assistant Prosecutors. Under the direction of supervisory staff, Assistant Prosecutors represent the State of New Jersey in criminal matters from investigation through trial, ensuring the fair, ethical, and effective administration of justice.
Assistant Prosecutors perform a wide range of professional legal duties, including case evaluation, legal research, courtroom advocacy, and collaboration with law enforcement, victims, and community partners. This position plays a critical role in advancing public safety and upholding the integrity of the criminal justice system.
All applicants are subject to pre-employment testing, including drug screening, physical examination, and comprehensive criminal background investigation. Eligible employees may qualify for federal student loan forgiveness under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Program and/or the John R. Justice Student Loan Repayment Grant Program.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Reviewspolice reports, evidence, and witness statements to determine appropriatecriminal charges.
- Preparescases for trial, including evaluating evidence and formulating prosecutionstrategies.
- Conductslegal research and drafts motions, briefs, indictments, search warrants, andother legal documents.
- Representsthe State in court proceedings, including arraignments, status conferences,motion hearings, grand jury proceedings, trials, and plea negotiations.
- Directsand assists law enforcement investigations, including determining the scope anddirection of investigations and charges to be presented to the Grand Jury.
- Manages anassigned caseload while maintaining accurate and complete case files anddocumentation.
- Communicateswith crime victims and witnesses in coordination with the Victim/Witness Unitto ensure their needs are addressed throughout the legal process.
- Advises,supervises, and collaborates with law enforcement agencies and investigators.
- Participatesin police training and community outreach initiatives, as appropriate.
- Performsother related duties as required to support the mission of the Mercer CountyProsecutor's Office.
REQUIREMENTS:
- JurisDoctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
- Admissionto the New Jersey Bar in good standing.
- Demonstratedcommitment to public service, ethical prosecution, and public safety.
- Successfulcompletion of a thorough background investigation, including review ofcriminal, civil, and financial matters.
- Appointeesmust possess a valid New Jersey driver's license if operation of a motorvehicle is required to perform essential job functions.

- Ability toanalyze complex legal issues and exercise sound professional judgment.

- Ability towork collaboratively with law enforcement, victims, witnesses, and internalteams.
