Primo Center is seeking qualified, caring individuals who want to make a difference supporting families experiencing homelessness by working as a HR Business Partner.

Today, Primo Center is a leader in providing family shelter and permanent supportive housing, integrated physical, dental, and mental health care, early childhood development, and supportive services to homeless families in Chicago. The organization has considerable capacity and experience as a provider of services to families affected by extreme poverty and homelessness. Each year Primo assists more than 1100 people in high-need communities across Chicago, operating facilities in Austin on Chicago's west side, Englewood on the south side, and Hermosa on the northwest side
Position Summary
The Human Resources Business Partner (HRBP) supports and enhances HR operations across all Primo Center locations. This role provides administrative support, coordinates employee initiatives, assists with recruitment activities and ensures streamlined HR processes for a positive employee experience. The HRBP collaborates closely with the Chief People Officer to ensure HR policies and procedures are executed effectively.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Administrative Support 80%
- Administers HR policies, procedures, and all benefit programs, including health welfare, time‑off plans, and employment records.
- Processes required documentation through payroll and insurance vendors to ensure accurate keeping and proper payroll deductions.
- Responds to routine employee inquiries with timely and accurate HR guidance.
- Completes, verifies, and maintains I‑9 documentation and employment eligibility records in compliance with federal regulations.
- Maintains HRIS data integrity through accurate data entry and regular audits of both digital and physical personnel files.
- Assists with HR reporting needs, audits, and compliance requirements.
- Manages general HR correspondence, including mailings, copying, scanning, and document tracking.
Employee engagement Support 10%
- Coordinates onboarding activities, including orientations, annual background checks, and related new hire processes
- Supports the performance review cycle by scheduling checkpoints, tracking completion, and preparing review materials.
- Assists in planning and implementing employee engagement and wellness initiatives to strengthen workplace culture.
- Helps develop and distribute internal communications that support organizational alignment and employee connection across locations.
Recruitment Support 10%
- Assists with full-cycle recruitment activities, including posting positions, scheduling interviews, and guiding candidates through hiring steps.
- Tracks candidate progress, ensures timely follow-up, and coordinates end‑of‑process communications.
- Partners with hiring managers and the Chief People Officer prepare interview materials and ensure consistent and organized hiring experience.
- Create new hire files and ensure all onboarding documentation is accurately completed and retained.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills and high attention to detail.
- Ability to prioritize, meet deadlines, and adapt in a fast‑paced environment.
- Working knowledge of HR principles and practices.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite; experience with HRIS systems preferred.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in human resources or related fields and/or equivalent experience.
- At least two years' related experience required.
- SHRM-CP credential preferred.
This role requires the ability to:
- Ability to work in office 5 days a week
- Lift and carry up to 25 lbs. (e.g., supplies, personal belongings)
- Stand, walk, bend, and climb stairs frequently throughout a shift
- Respond rapidly to crises—move quickly across the facility and grounds
- Work in a variety of indoor settings; occasional exposure to loud or crowded environments
Compensation and Benefits –
Salary: $57,888 - 65,000 (exempt, full-time) Benefits include:
