Position Summary:
The Camp Counselor will assist in maintaining the safety and wellbeing of campers as related to all applicable governing guidelines. They will assist with integrating the principles of the Girl Scout program into camp activities and cabin life. Camp Counselors will also run specialized activities such as swimming, challenge course, archery, and more. Camp Counselors must commit to lead by example and live by the Girl Scout Law.
Key Responsibilities:
• To incorporate opportunities for teaching courage, confidence, and character during daily interaction with campers and staff.
• Facilitate a supportive cabin environment where campers learn to respect one another in recognition of the differences and similarities that each share.
• Assist in teaching outdoor skills and techniques and fostering an appreciation for the natural environment.
• Create an atmosphere of teamwork by leading girls through teambuilding programming on and off the challenge course.
• Work within established Girl Scout methods of camper government which provides the opportunity for girl planning and decision making.
• Review safety procedures and programming daily.
• Assist in maintenance of equipment records and program area maintenance.
• Facilitate daily camp programming activities as assigned.
• Assist in opening and closing of camp.
• Facilitate daily cabin housekeeping and cabin chores (Kapers).
• The ability to assist campers with a variety of needs such as homesickness, conflict resolution, and behavior management.
• Responsible for camper welfare and complying with the instructions from the Health Supervisor in relation to camper health needs.
• Follow camp policies, standards, and procedures.
• Carry out other non-essential duties as delegated by the assistant director of camps including assisting staff in other cabins, assisting in the office, assisting in the kitchen, and assisting with camp programs or events.
• Supervise mealtimes.
• Other duties as assigned.
Essential Requirements:
This position requires registration as a member of Girl Scouts of the U.S.A.
Willingness to obtain CPR and First Aid certification.
Willingness to obtain Shallow Water Lifeguard certification
Willingness to obtain Aquatics observer certification
Willingness to obtain Leave No Trace certification
Willingness to obtain Challenge Course certification
Willingness to obtain USA Archery level one certification
Experience in the outdoors
Equipment Used: Program supplies, specialty activity supplies, cleaning supplies, walkie-talkies.
Physical Activities: Typing, reaching, talking, hearing, bending, stooping and repetitive motions, climbing, belaying, drawing a bow, laying down, dancing,
Physical Demands: : Ability to walk, stand, and sit for long periods of time. (2-3 hours). Walk distances of 2-3 miles in a day. Respond quickly to potential emergencies. Ability to lift 50 pounds. Ability to pull back 12 lbs. recurve bow
Software: Microsoft Office Suite; Microsoft Outlook or equivalent calendaring systems
Work Conditions: Activities occur both in an indoor and outdoor environment.
