Requirements:Job Summary
The Scientist, Mechanical Engineering is a hands-on role and is actively engaged in the Design and Mechanical Engineering activities for Business Unit. This role supports the engineering team in these disciplines from initial requirements through the product lifecycle and focuses on opto-mechanical packaging design and analysis and associated technology development and will be responsible for the design, layout, testing and evaluation of laser range finder and target designator systems.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provides mastery-level mechanical engineering expertise to the team.
- Engages with local business and functional leadership to ensure alignment of development and capabilities with business forecasts.
- Acts as an individual contributor executing program (project lead, SME, team member) and/or proposals (proposal manager, proposal contributor).
- Responsible for the design, layout, testing and evaluation of mechanical and electro-mechanical devices or systems.
- Prepares design specifications, analysis and recommendations for presentation and approval.
- Analyses of mechanical requirements to determine feasibility of design within time and cost constraints
- Perform product development activities including interpretation/implementation of customer specifications and documentation requirements.
- Perform significant CAD modeling of parts & assemblies.
- Manage CAD models and associated data using PDM.
- Review and approve mechanical design drawings and documentation as needed.
- Assist with schedule, cost, and advises team and program on pertinent design factors such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials and equipment, interchangeability, replaceability, strength-weight efficiency, contractual specification requirements at the major subsystem level.
- Proposal support, basis of estimate creation and report / track task status in control account manager (CAM) role using earned value methods as needed. Complete cost estimation for proposals
- Interface with customers & Senior management
- Collaborate with cross-discipline teams (systems, structural, thermal, power, optical, electrical) in development, integration, and execution.
- As needed, represent BU during major system level design reviews including System Requirements Review (SRR), Preliminary Design Reviews (PDR), Critical Design Reviews (CDR), and Test Readiness Reviews (TRR), and Pre-Shipment Review (PSR).
- Partner across functions and make a lasting impact on product integrity, customer satisfaction, and operational excellence.
- Support in the development and execution of the strategic technology vision and roadmap to address new and emerging equipment and technologies.
- Deliver products and services that meet cost, quality, and time expectations by working collaboratively with customers and employees.
- Ensure internal processes and programs produce products that meet or exceed customers’ expectations.
- Travel, domestic and international, may be required to support business needs.
REQUIRED CAPABILITIES
- U.S. Citizenship required due to government contract requirements.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to brief at all levels within the company as well as with external customers.
- Ability to develop consensus and drive the team to achieve program goals.
- Demonstrated highly effective organization, team orientation and leadership skills.
- Strong project management skills.
- Solid understanding of optical and electromechanical systems and hardware
- Ability to effectively communicate and transfer mechanical and design knowledge with other disciplines including software and hardware engineering, manufacturing, program management, suppliers and customers.
- Ability to work efficiently under pressure and to tight deadlines.
- Willingness to take on project ownership and accountability and work outside of regularly scheduled hours to meet company objectives.
EDUCATION/ EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree and minimum of 12 years or Graduate degree and minimum of 10 years of prior relevant experience
- 10+ years’ experience with mechanical design, requirements analysis, specification generation, interface definition, component selection, component 3D CAD modeling, data management and product documentation in a DoD environment
- 8+ years’ experience writing technical documentation and developing analysis and reports.
- 8+ years’ experience in a mechanical engineering leadership role
- 8+ years’ experience participating in SRR, PDR, CDR and TRR reviews.
- 8+ years’ experience working in a PDM system.
- Proficient with SolidWorks and mechanical engineering software
