Description: Job Summary

The Direct Support Professional (DSP) provides direct care and habilitative support to individuals with developmental, intellectual, or physical disabilities in a residential setting. The DSP assists individuals in developing and maintaining daily living skills, promoting independence, and supporting meaningful participation in their home and community. This role focuses on person-centered care, dignity, and enhancing quality of life.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide direct care and supervision in a residential home environment
  • Assist individuals with activities of daily living (ADLs), including bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, and eating
  • Support individuals in developing habilitative skills such as cooking, cleaning, budgeting, and personal care
  • Implement individualized service plans (ISPs) and behavior support plans as directed
  • Promote independence, choice-making, and self-advocacy
  • Support participation in community activities, outings, and social engagement
  • Administer or assist with medications in accordance with agency policy and training
  • Monitor and document daily progress, behaviors, and any health or safety concerns
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and structured home environment
  • Use positive behavioral supports and de-escalation techniques when needed
  • Communicate effectively with team members, supervisors, guardians, and other service providers
  • Follow all state regulations, agency policies, and reporting requirements
Requirements: Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities preferred (not always required)
  • CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain)
  • Ability to complete required state and agency training (e.g., medication administration, behavior support)
  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record (if transporting individuals)
  • Ability to pass background check and drug screening

Working Conditions
  • Work takes place in a residential home setting
  • May include evenings, weekends, overnight shifts, and holidays
  • Regular interaction with individuals with varying levels of support needs
  • May involve exposure to behavioral or medical challenges
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift, transfer, and assist individuals safely
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and perform physical tasks throughout the shift
  • Ability to respond quickly in emergency situations
