Job Description Summary
The University of South Alabama’s department of Microbiology and Immunology is seeking to hire a Program Coordinator, Laboratory of Infectious Diseases (LID). Interested candidates should apply to be considered.
Essential Functions
These are the job duties required of the position.
Essential Functions
  • Assists with the administration and operation of the Laboratory of Infectious Diseases (LID) and its associated biocontainment facilities.
  • Coordinates and documents annual laboratory inspections to ensure compliance with federal, state, institutional, biosafety, and security requirements; facilitates corrective actions for identified deficiencies.
  • Maintains and updates LID Biosafety, Incident Response, and Security plans and associated records; coordinates drills and training exercises for each.
  • Maintains personnel training records respirator fit-test documentation, and visitor logs/training records.
  • Coordinates onboarding of new personnel, annual refresher training, and facility access requirements for authorized personnel and visitors.
  • Ensures access to the facility and specific laboratories is limited to appropriately trained and approved individuals.
  • Coordinates enrollment of authorized users in Occupational Health Program (OHP) and respiratory protection programs.
  • Manages communal PPE, supplies, and decontamination materials, including PAPRs, scrubs, footwear, towels, and related inventory.
  • Performs routine safety and compliance activities, including eyewash and safety shower checks, autoclave validations, and maintenance of shared equipment records.
  • Assists in writing and/or evaluating standard operating procedures (SOPs) for routine safety and compliance activities.
  • Coordinates facility maintenance and service requests for laboratory spaces and equipment.
  • Receives visitors according to facility protocols and assist with facility tours as required.
  • Monitors deliveries and aid with delivery/receipt of research specimen shipments.
  • Reports suspicious packages, incidents, occupational exposures, thefts, losses, or releases in accordance with institutional and regulatory requirements.
  • Serves a Building Safety Coordinator and support Department of Safety and Environmental Compliance (SEC) initiatives.
  • Tracks facility-related costs, including oversight of maintenance contracts and other service-related expenses.
  • Schedules LID Oversight Committee meetings and maintains meeting minutes and other related documentation.
  • Orders supplies for shared laboratory spaces and office spaces.
  • Assists with purchasing and budget tracking activities for LID principal investigators (PIs).
  • Assists the LID Director with special projects and performs molecular, microbiological, or laboratory support as needed.
  • Regular and prompt attendance.
  • Ability to work schedule as defined and overtime as required.
  • Related duties as required.
