Job Description
Position Description:
The Mission of the Community Relations/Funeral Director is to increase funeral home net revenue every year—combination of increasing call volumes and ARPC of the funeral home.
The Community Relations/Funeral Director will arrange, oversee, direct, and coordinate all aspects of community interaction with the home, to include organizing community outreach programs, and coordinates special events that will influence public opinion or promote products, services, or ideas of the funeral home. And may be asked to perform funeral director duties from time to time.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Builds and maintains relationships with members of the community.
- Plans, develops, implements, and organizes events and volunteers to advance the mission and goals of the funeral home.
- Organizes community outreach programs and coordinates special events that will influence public opinion or promote products, services, or ideas of the home.
- Support the goals and priorities for the home.
- May be asked to perform funeral director duties.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to interact with families during time of need and create and maintain a premier level of client family satisfaction.
- Skillfully discusses options and preference for disposition of the remains; addresses and explains the costs of the funeral and collects payment with family and/or legal representatives of the deceased.
- Plans and coordinates arrangements for the funeral, including the ordering of merchandise as needed.
- Coordinates service details with clergy, pallbearers, and other service participants.
- Makes arrangements with cemeteries for scheduling, opening and closing of gravesite and use of facilities, as necessary.
- Oversees the issuance of death notices, obituaries, and related paperwork to government agencies and preferred newspapers or other appropriate media.
- Ensures all required documents are completed, and recorded in a timely and orderly manner, consulting with family to obtain accurate and necessary information for completion.
- Coordinates their work with all members of the funeral home team.
- Abide by all federal, state and local regulations related funerals or cremations.
- Practice and strictly enforce all logging, identification, casketing and cremation processes of the home.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Superior interpersonal skills and ability to work extremely well as part of a team.
- Ability to work well under pressure and manage sensitive or controversial subjects with tact, kindness, and professionalism.
- Ability to manage distressing and stressful situations with sensitivity and care.
- Thorough understanding of laws related to funerals and funeral arrangements.
- Ability to promptly and accurately execute required legal paperwork.
- Ability to perform mortuary services.
- Detail-oriented and extremely organized.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Associate's Degree in Mortuary Science and 1+ years' of industry experience.
- At least two (2) years' of work in public relations or at least two (2) years of work in a field related to the company preferred.
- Current funeral director and/or embalmer licensure or certification required by state regulations.
- Knowledge of current federal, state and local regulations related to the funeral industry.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
- Valid driver's license and good driving record.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
May be required to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and pushing/pulling up to 100 pounds.
Physical Demands: Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer; must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
May be present at wakes and memorial services sponsored by the home, and may travel with the family to church and then to the cemetery and grave site following funeral services.
Hazards associated with trade: possible exposure to communicable disease, blood borne pathogens, formaldehyde, and high temperature work environment in crematory.
