Pinto Valley is an open-pit copper mine located at the west end of the historic Globe-Miami mining district of central Arizona, approximately 80 miles east of Phoenix. Pinto Valley has been in operation since 1972 and has produced more than four billion pounds of copper. Acquired by Capstone from BHP in 2013, the mine is fully permitted through 2039 and a study is underway to potentially extend the mine life through 2050.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Survey Technician I support mine operations by performing field and office surveying activities to ensure accurate measurement, mapping, and documentation of mine features, infrastructure, and excavation progress. This entry-level position assists in collecting spatial data used for operational planning, production tracking, engineering projects, and regulatory compliance.

The position works closely with Mine Engineering, Geology, Operations, and Construction teams while learning and applying survey techniques, equipment, and software in a safe and productive mining environment.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Field Survey Support: Assist with topographic, construction, grade control, and production surveys throughout the mine site.
  • Survey Data Collection: Operate GPS, total station, drone, and other survey equipment to collect accurate field measurements and spatial data.
  • Data Processing & Mapping: Process survey data and assist in preparing maps, drawings, and reports using mine planning and CAD software.
  • Grade and Layout Activities: Support staking and layout activities for roads, drill patterns, dumps, stockpiles, utilities, and other mine infrastructure.
  • Monitoring & Verification: Assist in verifying excavation progress, material movement, stockpile volumes, and compliance with mine plans.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Perform basic maintenance, calibration checks, and care of survey equipment and instruments.
  • Safety & Compliance: Follow all site safety procedures, environmental requirements, and department standards while working in field and office settings.
  • Team Collaboration: Work effectively with engineers, geologists, supervisors, contractors, and operations personnel to support business objectives.
  • Continuous Improvement: Participate in training and development opportunities to build technical surveying knowledge and professional skills.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Required

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Associate degree or technical training in Surveying, Geomatics, Engineering Technology, Mining Technology, or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Basic understanding of surveying principles and practices.
  • Ability to learn and operate GPS, total station, and related survey equipment.
  • Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to read and interpret maps, drawings, and technical documents.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in data collection and documentation.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and mining conditions.

Preferred

  • Previous surveying experience in mining, construction, civil engineering, or related industries.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Vulcan, MineSight, Carlson Survey, or similar software.
  • Experience using GPS or robotic total station equipment.
  • FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certification or interest in obtaining certification.
  • Knowledge of open-pit mining operations.

WORK ENVIRONMENT / PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Combination of field-based and office-based work in an active open-pit mining operation.
  • Frequent work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, wind, and dust.
  • Walking on uneven terrain, mine roads, stockpiles, and operating areas.
  • Frequent standing, walking, climbing, bending, and lifting of survey equipment.
  • Exposure to moving heavy equipment, industrial noise, and mining-related hazards.
  • Ability to lift and carry survey equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times in operational areas.

All candidates will be required to complete a pre-employment medical exam, drug and alcohol test, and background check. All positions require a pre-placement physical examination to ensure candidates are fit for duty. Additional training and/or testing may be required. Capstone maintains a drug and alcohol-free workplace.
