Job Description
Firestorm is seeking an Associate Mechanical Engineer, UGV to support the design, fabrication, integration, and testing of mission payloads and ground vehicle systems. You will collaborate closely with mechanical, electrical, and software engineering teams to advance designs from initial concept through production and system integration, followed by structured field and range testing. Work will progress rapidly from design to deployment, requiring strong ownership and attention to detail. The position also involves traveling to test events, demonstrations, and customer engagements. This role is well-suited for an engineer who wants to attack ambiguous problems with pragmatic solutions.
What You'll Do
- Design mechanical systems, assemblies, mounts, enclosures and payload interfaces for platforms in CAD, and produce drawings ready for fabrication
- Build, assemble and modify vehicle hardware using shop tools, 3D printing and basic fabrication methods
- Integrate payloads and subsystems onto vehicles, including mounting, cable routing and supporting power and harness installation with the electrical team
- Write and run lab, field and range test plans; collect and analyze data; and write clear test reports with findings and recommended fixes
- Debug hardware problems in the field and quickly turn lessons learned into design changes
- Document interfaces, configurations and system architectures so builds can be repeated and traced
- Take part in design reviews and suggest improvements for reliability, ruggedness and ease of field maintenance
- Support customer demonstrations, government test events and partner integration work
- Perform other duties as directed
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field
- 'U.S. Person' as defined by 22 CFR § 120.62 required due to ITAR regulations, which includes U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents (Green Card holders), or protected individuals under asylee or refugee status
- 1+ years of engineering experience, including internships, co-ops or substantial project-team work, in hardware design, integration or test
- Experience with 3D CAD (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Onshape or similar), including assemblies and fabrication drawings
- Hands-on shop and fabrication skills: hand and power tools, shop equipment, and assembly of mechanical systems
- Experience running tests and analyzing the data (for example Python, MATLAB or Excel), with clear written results
- Knowledge of engineering first principles, including statics, dynamics, materials and tolerancing
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience on DoW or other government programs
- Experience at a startup or on a small team where you worked across disciplines and shipped hardware quickly with limited resources
- Collegiate Engineering Project team experience (Formula SAE, Baja SAE, Solar Car, Rocket Team, etc.)
- Familiarity with mil-spec or ruggedized design (environmental sealing, shock and vibration, MIL-STD-810)
- Working knowledge of wiring, connectors and harness builds (crimping, soldering, reading schematics)
- GD&T and design for manufacturing (DFM) experience
