About Pathways to Housing DC

Everyone deserves a place to call home.

Founded in 2004, Pathways to Housing DC (Pathways DC) provides home, health, and hope to more than 3,500 individuals each year who are experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness.

Leveraging 22 years of experience and a bold vision, Pathways DC programs and services include Homeless Street Outreach and support services at the Downtown DC Day Services Center; Housing Case Management; Outpatient Mental Health Treatment; a Youth Drop-In Center; Medical Respite Homes; and more.

Our programs and services have a vast reach and impact--serving individuals with mental health challenges; women fleeing domestic violence; Veterans fighting new battles following the traumas of war; and youth exiting the foster care system with no real place to ever call home. We know that with the right resources at the right time, homelessness in our community is solvable.

As the originator of the Housing First model in the region, Pathways DC is proud to provide housing across all eight Wards in Washington, DC and with an expanding footprint in Montgomery County, MD. Our scope helps to promote client choice and self-determination in our work and builds a high housing retention success rate each year.

The Opportunity

Pathways DC has a loyal community of supporters who believe in Housing First and the possibility of ending homelessness. We’re creating this position to give those relationships more attention and bring new donors into the work.

As our Individual Giving Manager, you’ll get to know what motivates our donors, help them understand what their giving makes possible, and invite them to deepen their support. You’ll manage a portfolio of donors and prospects, lead individual giving appeals, and build a consistent approach to stewardship, from a timely thank-you call to a personal conversation about a larger gift.

Working closely with the Director of Institutional Advancement and members of the development team, you’ll have room to shape how we cultivate, ask, and thank. There are existing relationships to build on and opportunities to develop new ones. We’re looking for someone who enjoys connecting with people and developing plans to keep those relationships growing.

The Pathways DC development team works remotely, with occasional in-person work at the DC office, program sites, donor meetings, and events.

Key Responsibilities

Build donor relationships and grow giving

  • Manage a portfolio of individual donors and prospects, developing tailored plans for cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
  • Identify prospective donors and opportunities for current supporters to increase their giving.
  • Make direct asks and partner with the Director of Institutional Advancement and Executive Director on major gift conversations.
  • Prepare leadership for donor meetings with research, briefing materials, suggested asks, and clear next steps.
  • Partner with leadership and board members to identify prospects, facilitate introductions, and support donor outreach.
  • Develop thoughtful ways to welcome new donors, retain existing supporters, and reconnect with lapsed donors.
  • Help grow monthly giving and encourage sustained support for Pathways DC.

Plan appeals and donor communications

  • Plan and execute individual giving campaigns, including year-end appeals and targeted outreach to different donor groups.
  • In collaboration with the Communications Manager, write appeals, thank-you messages, impact updates, and other donor-facing fundraising materials.
  • Work with program and communications colleagues to connect participant stories with clear results, helping donors understand what their support makes possible.
  • Ensure fundraising materials respect participants’ dignity, privacy, and choices.
  • Evaluate campaign results and use what you learn to improve future outreach.

Create opportunities for engagement

  • Plan and coordinate donor cultivation and stewardship events, including invitations, logistics, leadership preparation, and follow-up.
  • Coordinate donor site visits and other engagement opportunities (i.e., donor webinars, point-of-entry events) to learn about Pathways DC’s work.
  • Support event sponsorship outreach and sponsor stewardship in collaboration with development colleagues.

Keep the program organized and moving forward

  • Maintain accurate donor records, relationship history, outreach activity, and next steps in Bloomerang.
  • Use donor data to identify giving patterns, prioritize outreach, and spot opportunities for renewed or increased support.
  • Partner with colleagues to ensure timely gift acknowledgment and follow-up.
  • Develop individual giving goals and work plans with the Director of Institutional Advancement.
  • Track revenue, donor retention, campaign results, and progress across your portfolio.
  • Document useful processes and templates so colleagues can access and build on your work.
  • Use technology, including AI tools where appropriate, to support research, writing, and workflow management. Review and verify AI-assisted work and follow organizational confidentiality standards.
Qualifications

We recognize that relevant experience comes from a wide range of personal, professional, and educational opportunities. We take a broad view of each candidate’s experience and do not require a particular degree.

Required qualifications:

  • Genuine commitment to ending homelessness and to Pathways’ mission, vision, and Housing First approach.
  • At least three years of relevant nonprofit fundraising or donor relationship experience, including individual giving.
  • Minimum of a High School Diploma/GED
  • Experience cultivating donor relationships, asking for financial support, and securing financial commitments.
  • Clear, engaging writing and the ability to explain an organization’s work to different audiences.
  • Strong listening skills and comfort building relationships in person, by phone, and virtually.
  • Excellent management, public speaking, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong ability and desire to work strategically and collaboratively.
  • Detail oriented, with an ability to see both the forest and the trees.
  • Ability to manage up, down and across effectively.
  • Solid diplomacy skills (able to successfully manage external relationships and effectively liaise with colleagues at all levels).
  • The ability to manage competing priorities, meet deadlines, and follow through independently while staying in communication with colleagues.
  • Experience using a donor database to maintain records and guide outreach.
  • Sound judgment with sensitive information and a commitment to respectful, ethical fundraising.
  • Ability to attend occasional in-person meetings, site visits, and events in the Washington, DC area.
  • Proficiency in Word and Excel required; knowledge of Bloomerang fundraising software or similar fundraising software/databases strongly recommended.

Nice to have, but not required:
