Title: Dyslexia/Reading Specialist

Reports to: Executive Director of Special Education

Work Schedule: M-F / 8:30am-5:00pm

Position Type/FLSA Status: Full-Time / Exempt

Summary:

The Archdiocese of San Antonio is seeking a full-time Certified Academic Language Therapist (CALT) on staff that will report to the Executive Director of Special Education.

We are searching for a candidate whose faith and relationship with Jesus Christ is the driving principle in their life who teach and act in accordance with the morals and values of the Catholic Church.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Train archdiocesan teachers on a viable dyslexia program: Take Flight, Reading by Design or other program
  • Monitor fidelity of reading program at each campus
  • Monitor progress of dyslexia students across the Archdiocese of San Antonio
  • Maintain a database of students who qualify for dyslexia across the archdiocese
  • Provide quality professional development on dyslexia strategies for all teachers
  • Conducts individual and group parent training sessions on dyslexia awareness, home-based intervention techniques, and collaboration with school personnel; provides written materials and resources to support parent understanding
  • Provide dyslexia services to students on a campus in the event of a vacancy or a leave of absence
  • Develops and implements a comprehensive dyslexia screening protocol for the archdiocese in grades K-3; identifies students at-risk for dyslexia and establishes tiered intervention plans based on screening results
  • Collaborate with teachers in classrooms to help enrich curricular approaches and improve pedagogy to better meet the needs of students
  • Train administrators on classroom “look fors” in a quality dyslexia program
  • Develop strategies to meet the academic needs of identified students
  • Vet reading programs and seek out new and innovative curricula, texts, and technological applications for implementation in the classroom
  • Provide training for quality tier 1 instruction in reading
  • Provide input for student accommodation plan meetings
  • Understands the Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) process
  • Knowledge and understanding of disabilities in the Texas education system
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding individual needs and school matters
  • Use effective communication skills, written and oral, to present information accurately and clearly to staff, students, and other professionals
  • Supports and adheres to the policies and procedures of the school and archdiocese of San Antonio, including the Religious Standards for Catholic School Employees
  • Adheres to safety training and protocols daily and takes precautionary measures to ensure the safety and well-being of self, others
  • Attend meetings, events, and professional development (including after work hours)
  • Possess strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrate professionalism in conduct, demeanor, and work habits
  • Responsible for protecting the confidentiality of any information or material obtained in the service with the organization to include but not limited to client names and information, services rendered to clients, donors names and gifts, internal and external investigations or results of any investigations, and financial information
  • Adherence to the Code of Conduct and the Faith and Moral Policy is mandatory

Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

Education

  • Master’s degree in education/reading or related field
  • Certified Academic Language Therapist (CALT)

Experience

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience teaching with at least 2 years’ experience teaching reading or providing dyslexia intervention and/or related experience

License and Credentials

  • Texas Teacher Certification
  • Certified Academic Language Therapist (CALT)
  • Reliable transportation
  • Valid driver license
  • Valid vehicle insurance

Minimum Knowledge and Skills:

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in teaching, including dyslexia intervention
  • Extensive understanding of dyslexia, and approved dyslexia programs
  • Experience with Microsoft Office and Google Suite
  • Knowledgeable about disabilities and the MTSS process
  • Must be detail-oriented, organized, self-motivated, work well independently and on a team
  • Must have good written and verbal skills
  • Must have good critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Must pass archdiocesan Safe Environment Requirements and background screening
  • Must pass Texas DPS Fingerprint-based Applicant Clearinghouse screening

Physical Requirements:

The position requires the following physical demands in the frequency noted.

  • Constantly (2/3 or more of the time) - Talking, Hearing
  • Frequently (From 1/3 to 2/3 of the time) - Lifting up to 10 pounds, Sitting, Walking, Standing, Repetitive motions, Driving
  • Occasionally (Up to 1/3 of the time) - Climbing, Reach above shoulder height, Reach below shoulder height, Stooping
  • Rarely (less than on hour per week) - Running, Bending waist (forward or sideways), Balancing, Squatting, Pushing, Pulling, Crawling

Travel Requirements:

Travel requirements for the position include 99% local and 1% overnight.
