Job Description
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Service Mesh Engineer based in the United States.
This role focuses on designing, operating, and evolving enterprise-grade service mesh platforms that enable secure, observable, and resilient communication across large Kubernetes environments. You will work at the intersection of platform engineering, networking, and security, helping standardize service-to-service communication at scale. The position is highly hands-on, involving deep work with Istio and Linkerd, along with Envoy-based architectures and cloud-native tooling. You will collaborate closely with SRE, security, and application teams to ensure seamless adoption of mesh capabilities without unnecessary operational overhead. The environment is engineering-driven, with strong emphasis on reliability, automation, and performance optimization. This is a remote-first role offering the opportunity to shape foundational infrastructure used across mission-critical systems.
In this role, you will be responsible for building and operating service mesh infrastructure that enables secure and scalable communication across distributed systems. You will design and optimize mesh architectures while ensuring reliability, performance, and adoption across engineering teams.
- Design, deploy, and operate service mesh platforms (primarily Istio and Linkerd) across multi-cluster Kubernetes environments
- Implement and manage mTLS, certificate lifecycle automation, and workload identity propagation
- Define and enforce traffic management policies including routing, retries, circuit breaking, and fault injection
- Integrate service mesh with ingress, egress, and API gateway layers to standardize traffic flows
- Build and enhance observability for service-to-service communication using tracing, metrics, and topology insights
- Develop secure zero-trust policies and service-level authorization mechanisms within the mesh
- Lead mesh upgrades, control-plane lifecycle management, and configuration governance
- Collaborate with SRE, platform, and security teams on incident response and production reliability
- Create adoption frameworks, onboarding guides, and reusable patterns for application teams
- Troubleshoot complex networking, identity, and performance issues across mesh components
The ideal candidate brings strong platform engineering or SRE experience with deep expertise in Kubernetes networking and service mesh technologies. You are comfortable operating in production environments and solving complex distributed system challenges.
- 5+ years of experience in platform engineering, SRE, DevOps, or networking roles
- Hands-on production experience with Istio and/or Linkerd
- Strong expertise in Kubernetes, including networking, CNI, ingress, and service discovery
- Deep understanding of Envoy proxy architecture and traffic handling
- Solid knowledge of mTLS, PKI, certificate rotation, and identity management
- Experience building observability solutions for distributed systems (metrics, tracing, logging)
- Proficiency in Go or Python for automation and tooling
- Strong troubleshooting skills across network, application, and control-plane layers
- Experience designing or operating multi-cluster or large-scale distributed environments is highly valued
- Clear communication skills and ability to work cross-functionally with technical teams
- Competitive annual salary range of $100,000–$150,000 based on experience
- Fully remote position within the United States
- Long-term, full-time W2 employment structure
- Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance options
- Paid time off, holidays, and flexible work arrangements
- Opportunity to work on large-scale, production-critical cloud infrastructure
- Career growth in advanced Kubernetes and service mesh technologies
- Exposure to cutting-edge cloud-native, zero-trust, and observability practices
