Job Description
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior AI Researcher based in Canada.
This is a highly applied research role focused on transforming cutting-edge AI advances into real-world systems that modernize civic and regulatory workflows. You will work on complex, unstructured data problems within a production environment, applying techniques across computer vision, large language models, multimodal learning, and agentic AI systems. The role combines deep research ownership with end-to-end delivery, requiring you to take ideas from initial exploration through to deployed, production-grade models. You will operate in a fast-moving, lean team where research is tightly connected to product impact and user outcomes. This is a hands-on position for someone who enjoys solving ambiguous, high-impact problems and directly shaping how AI is used in real operational settings. Your work will help improve speed, consistency, and accessibility in critical public-sector processes.
- Lead applied AI research initiatives across computer vision, LLMs, multimodal learning, and agentic AI workflows for real-world permitting and compliance use cases.
- Design, run, and evaluate end-to-end experiments, from problem framing to model validation and production deployment.
- Translate ambiguous product and business needs into structured research questions, technical approaches, and executable development plans.
- Develop, fine-tune, and optimize machine learning models, including architecture design, dataset preparation, training, and performance tuning.
- Own the full lifecycle of AI systems from experimentation to production, including deployment, monitoring, and iterative improvement using MLOps practices.
- Make pragmatic trade-offs between model accuracy, cost, latency, scalability, and interpretability in production environments.
- Build and improve agentic AI systems and workflows that integrate LLMs and multimodal models into practical applications.
- Analyze model performance and experimental outcomes to guide technical direction and prioritize high-impact research opportunities.
- Stay current with advances in AI research and selectively integrate relevant innovations into production systems.
- Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to communicate technical decisions, align priorities, and ensure research translates into measurable impact.
- 7–10+ years of experience in applied AI research with demonstrated success delivering production-grade ML systems.
- Proven experience owning AI/ML projects end-to-end, including deployment, monitoring, and MLOps infrastructure (CI/CD, containerization, observability).
- Strong background in deep learning model development, including training, fine-tuning, and architecture-level design decisions.
- Hands-on expertise in computer vision techniques such as object detection, segmentation, feature extraction, and image processing.
- Experience with LLMs, multimodal systems, diffusion models, or agentic AI workflows in production environments.
- Strong programming skills in Python and proficiency with frameworks such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, or JAX.
- Experience deploying and managing models on cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure).
- Strong software engineering practices including Git, testing, modular design, and scalable system development.
- Ability to operate independently in ambiguous environments and translate unclear requirements into structured technical plans.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to explain complex research to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Strong analytical and experimental intuition, with the ability to make decisions under uncertainty using incomplete data.
- Experience in civic tech, compliance, construction, or regulated domains is a plus.
- Competitive compensation aligned with experience, estimated at $165,000–$205,000 CAD base salary.
- Remote-first work environment with flexibility and autonomy.
- Comprehensive benefits package supporting health and well-being (varies by employment type).
- Paid time off and company-wide holidays, including an extended year-end break.
- Opportunity to work on impactful AI systems improving public-sector and civic processes.
- Access to cutting-edge AI problems spanning LLMs, computer vision, and multimodal systems.
- Occasional in-person company or team gatherings (1–2 times per year in Canada/US).
- Inclusive, mission-driven culture emphasizing ownership, growth mindset, and continuous learning.
- Strong focus on responsible AI development and meaningful real-world impact.
