Job Description
Production Coordinator
The Production Coordinator is responsible for coordinating the day-to-day flow of work through the manufacturing facility. This position supports the Production Manager by maintaining production schedules, preparing and controlling work orders and job packets, coordinating manufacturing priorities, monitoring material requirements and inventory, and communicating production needs throughout the organization.
The Production Coordinator also supports the preparation of manufacturing information required by the shop, including shop drawings, material lists, plate and flange information, and nesting files. The position serves as a key connection between production planning and shop-floor execution, with the goal of maintaining efficient workflow, minimizing material waste, removing production constraints, and ensuring work is completed according to schedule.
Essential Functions
- Review, maintain, and coordinate production schedules across manufacturing departments to maintain proper workflow and production priorities.
- Create and distribute daily work orders and production information to manufacturing personnel with a high level of accuracy, detail, and organization.
- Review computer-generated shop drawings, material lists, DXF files, and other production information required to release work to manufacturing.
- Utilize nesting software to organize and set production runs through CNC machines.
- Prepare and maintain job packets, including control of plate and flange lists and other required manufacturing documentation.
- Utilize nesting software to efficiently process steel requirements, maximize material utilization, and minimize scrap.
- Review material requirements and inventory levels to ensure required material is available to support scheduled production.
- Maintain accurate production reporting related to daily schedules, work status, inventory, and manufacturing activity.
- Work closely with shop personnel to collect, verify, and input production data used to track key performance indicators.
- Communicate regularly with the Production Manager to ensure production priorities are clearly identified, communicated, and scheduled appropriately.
- Coordinate with Logistics and Customer Service to support the timely completion and delivery of manufactured material to the jobsite.
- Assist the Production Manager with identifying and removing obstacles that could negatively impact daily production, including equipment failures, schedule changes, personnel constraints, material issues, and incorrect or incomplete working documents.
- Assist with allocating personnel between production stations based on workload and production requirements to maximize throughput while controlling labor and overhead costs.
- Coordinate and control the plasma production schedule, including scheduled work, required work hours, equipment maintenance/upkeep, and communication of priorities.
- Communicate production changes, material issues, drawing problems, scheduling conflicts, and other constraints to the appropriate personnel.
- Work with Engineering/Detailing to resolve drawing, material, DXF, or production-document issues that could delay manufacturing.
- Support departmental training related to job responsibilities, production expectations, safety requirements, and accident-reporting procedures.
- Assist in ensuring production personnel follow applicable company safety requirements, OSHA requirements, and IAS guidelines.
- Support continuous improvement efforts focused on production flow, labor efficiency, material utilization, scrap reduction, and manufacturing productivity.
- Assist management in maintaining a clean, organized, and efficient manufacturing facility.
- Perform other duties as required to support manufacturing operations.
For the combined position:
- Ability to read and understand structural steel shop drawings, material lists, plate lists, flange lists, and production documentation.
- Working knowledge of structural steel manufacturing and production workflow.
- Ability to understand production schedules and translate scheduled requirements into actionable shop work.
- Strong computer skills and ability to work with manufacturing software and production-tracking systems.
- Experience with nesting software or ability to learn nesting processes.
- AutoCAD or related CAD/software experience preferred.
- Understanding of material utilization and the relationship between nesting, inventory, and scrap.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple jobs and production priorities simultaneously.
- High attention to detail when preparing and releasing production information.
- Ability to identify potential production constraints and communicate them before they affect scheduled work.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to coordinate effectively between office personnel and shop-floor production employees.

Key Responsibilities and Expectations
The Production Coordinator is expected to maintain visibility of what needs to be produced, when it needs to be produced, what information and material are required, and what constraints could prevent production from meeting the schedule.
The position should proactively identify issues before they affect downstream operations and work with Production, Engineering/Detailing, Logistics, Customer Service, and other departments to resolve those issues.
Performance Expectations
Success in this position is measured by the ability to maintain accurate production information, keep work flowing to the shop, communicate priorities effectively, identify constraints early, support efficient labor utilization, minimize material waste, and help manufacturing meet scheduled completion dates.
The Production Coordinator should function as a central point of coordination between the production schedule and actual shop execution, ensuring that the people, material, drawings, job packets, machine schedules, and production priorities are aligned before work reaches the manufacturing floor.
