Job Description:
Community Corrections Officer II

We are seeking highly motivated, professional Community Corrections Officer II candidates to fill two current vacancies within our agency. One position will be assigned to the Pretrial Services Division and one position will be assigned to the Community Corrections Division. In this critical role, you will provide direct supervision and case management for high-risk and special-needs individuals, supporting public safety and rehabilitation through evidence-based practices, strong communication, and collaborative partnerships.

You will maintain assigned caseloads in accordance with the Comprehensive Community Corrections Act, Pretrial Services Act, applicable policies and procedures, standards, and the Code of Virginia, while utilizing Effective Communication and Motivational Interviewing techniques.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Maintain an assigned caseload of high-risk/special needs cases and provide supervision in accordance with applicable laws, policies, and standards
  • Supervise electronic monitoring, intensive supervision, and mental health cases
  • Conduct comprehensive background investigations and criminal record checks to verify offender/defendant information
  • Coordinate treatment and community service referrals; develop case plans and conduct collateral contacts as needed
  • Administer drug and alcohol testing
  • Monitor compliance with community service requirements and court-ordered financial obligations
  • Conduct risk and needs assessments using effective communication techniques
  • Appear in court as required to provide testimony and respond to inquiries
  • Collect and enter data, and prepare timely court and agency reports using the PSLP database
  • Assist with inventories, equipment maintenance, case filing, and records management
  • Document all case file and investigative activities as required
  • Follow up on pending court cases and dispositions using VCIN and Supreme Court databases
  • Participate in DCJS/VCCJA workgroups as requested
  • Conduct case reviews and evaluate supervision levels for assigned Pretrial or Local Probation cases
  • Serve as a Team Lead/Subject Matter Expert and support training of new employees
  • Attend meetings on behalf of the Director/Coordinator as assigned
  • Perform other duties as required or directed

Required Qualifications:
Vocational/Educational Requirement: Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, sociology, psychology or related field.

Experience: In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of one year of related work experience in a Probation Officer, Pretrial Officer or Community Corrections Officer position.

Special Training, Certifications and/or Licenses: Four weeks of Basic Skills Training is required within six months of hire. Must maintain a valid driver’s license throughout employment period. Must pass a criminal record training course (VCIN) and various training tests for knowledge and competency during probationary period and meet or exceed benchmarks established by management. Requires a valid driver’s license and driving record in compliance with City Driving Standards.

Special Requirements: Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties..


Preferred Qualifications:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major coursework in criminal justice, sociology, psychology or a related field; and a minimum of three years of Community Corrections Officer experience.
