Schedule & Home Time
  • 6-day work week
  • Sunday–Friday: Start time between approximately 12:00 AM–1:00 AM
  • Routes typically run until approximately 12:00 PM, depending on the route and daily workload.
  • Saturday: Approximately 12:00 AM–7:00 AM
  • Home every night during the school year
  • Summer schedule: Weekly travel is required Tuesday–Friday, with employees home on weekends.
  • During the summer, drivers will have one local route and will travel the remainder of the week based on operational needs.
  • Schedule and routes may vary based on seasonality and business needs.

This position is safety-sensitive and requires a clear mind and diligence. The employee is responsible for their own safety as well as the safety of others.

About the Role

The SMART Route Driver is responsible for operating a Ford F-450 with a gooseneck trailer to service assigned routes and transport food waste and related materials.

This is an active driving position with multiple stops throughout the day. Drivers will be responsible for safely operating the truck and trailer, servicing customer locations, keeping equipment clean, completing required inspections and paperwork, and providing reliable customer service.

During the school year, the position is primarily local with daily home time. During the summer months, the position transitions to a combination of local and travel work. Drivers will have one local route and will travel Tuesday through Friday, returning home for the weekend.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate a Ford F-450 with a gooseneck trailer safely and efficiently.
  • Load, haul, and deliver food waste on assigned routes.
  • Complete multiple customer stops throughout the day based on company routing.
  • Operate manual and automatic transmission vehicles as required.
  • Safely connect, inspect, and operate the gooseneck trailer.
  • Operate a manual or electric pallet jack as needed.
  • Use a pressure washer to rinse bins and containers and leave customer locations clean and free of debris.
  • Perform daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections.
  • Use basic hand tools for minor repairs to company bins and equipment.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and basic condition of the truck, trailer, and equipment.
  • Utilize electronic systems for route information, documentation, and required records.
  • Maintain service tickets, contamination reports, maintenance records, and other required paperwork.
  • Communicate with customers, vendors, and the corporate/operations team regarding service and equipment issues.
  • Report accidents, injuries, and equipment issues immediately.
  • Attend and participate in safety calls, trainings, and operational briefings.
  • Use a computer and cell phone for training, communication, and expense management.
  • Work local routes during the school year with daily home time.
  • During the summer, complete one local route and travel Tuesday–Friday as assigned.
  • Operate in interstate commerce and travel as needed based on seasonal and operational requirements.
  • Maintain flexibility as routes and assignments may change based on business needs.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Class A CDL required.
  • Clean MVR and PSP preferred.
  • Stable work history.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen.
  • Ability to safely operate a truck and gooseneck trailer.
  • Ability and willingness to travel during the summer schedule.
  • Ability to work a 6-day schedule with very early morning start times.
  • Strong attention to safety and detail.
  • Ability to work independently and communicate effectively with customers and the operations team.
Physical Requirements
  • Regularly lift, pull, and/or push up to 70 pounds.
  • Regularly bend, stoop, twist, shovel, reach overhead, and climb in and out of the truck.
  • Ability to pull or roll totes weighing up to 300 pounds.
  • Ability to work around unpleasant odors associated with food waste and farms.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to safely perform physical work throughout the route.
Important Schedule Information

This is a 6-day-per-week position with very early morning starts.

During the school year, drivers are home every night.

During the summer, the position requires weekly travel Tuesday–Friday. Drivers will have one local route and then travel for the remainder of the week, with employees returning home on weekends.

Candidates should be comfortable with the early start times, 6-day workweek, physical nature of the job, and seasonal change from local daily routes to weekly travel.
