The Registered Nurse’s responsibilities in Radiation Oncology include assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care for a complex patient population. The RN provides patient and family education, psychosocial and emotional support, and functions as a member of a multidisciplinary care team. This role requires clinical expertise, critical thinking, collaborative practice, excellent communication skills, and an understanding of clinical research principles. I. Major Responsibilities:
Patient Care and Clinical Practice
1. Implements the nursing process: assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates care.
2. Administers medications and performs procedures safely and efficiently.
3. Educates patients and families about disease, treatment, and care plans.
4. Responds to emergencies and maintains BLS certification.
5. Identifies and refers to appropriate community resources.
6. Complies with professional nursing standards and licensure requirements.
Patient and Family Interaction
1. Establishes rapport with patients and families from diverse backgrounds.
2. Demonstrates compassion, respect, and cultural sensitivity.
3. Provides age-specific care and support.
Environment of Care
1. Monitors and maintains a safe care environment.
2. Complies with institutional and regulatory standards.
3. Adheres to the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses.
Unit and Institutional Contribution
1. Participates in setting and achieving unit and departmental goals.
2. Engages in committees, initiatives, and quality improvement projects.
3. Supports research activities and demonstrates flexibility in responsibilities.
Team Collaboration
1. Works collaboratively with peers and multidisciplinary teams.
2. Delegates appropriately and supervises assistive personnel.
3. Functions as charge nurse when needed and coordinates patient flow.
Professional Development
1. Identifies and pursues professional growth opportunities.
2. Attends educational events and shares knowledge with colleagues.
3. Acts as a preceptor and mentor.
4. Participates in professional organizations and prepares professional materials.
Age-Specific Competency

1. Complies with established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives.
2. Attends variety of meetings, conferences, seminars as required or directed.
3. Demonstrates use of Quality Improvement in daily operations.
4. Complies with all health and safety regulations and requirements.
5. Respects diverse views and approaches, demonstrates Standards of Respect, and contributes to creating and maintaining an environment of professionalism, tolerance, civility and acceptance toward all employees, patients and visitors.
II. Position Qualifications:
License/Certification/Education
Required:
1. Graduate of an NLN or CCE accredited school of nursing
2. Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
3. Current CPR certification
Preferred:
1. BSN
2. Certification in Oncology Nursing (OCN, AOCN, or CPON)
Experience/Skills
Required:
1. Minimum of 2 years recent experience as an RN in Oncology
2. Demonstrated ability to work as an effective member of an interdisciplinary team
3. Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, and independent decision-making skills
4. Ability to function in a busy setting with complex patient needs
Preferred:
1. Radiation Oncology specialty experience
2. Minimum of 2 years recent experience as an RN in an Ambulatory Oncology setting
Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.
Department-specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.
