Job Description
Position Summary
The General Technician is an entry-level technician role responsible for supporting fire apparatus and heavy vehicle service operations through hands-on assistance with inspections, preventative maintenance, repairs, parts replacement, shop organization, and daily operational readiness. This role exists to develop mechanically inclined individuals into skilled fire apparatus technicians while helping ensure emergency response vehicles are maintained safely, reliably, and professionally.
Essential Functions and Core Responsibilities
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Safely operate company vehicles as assigned and, upon obtaining the required Commercial Driver’s License, operate CDL-required vehicles in compliance with applicable laws, safety requirements, and company vehicle-use policies.
• Assist technicians with inspections, diagnostics, preventative maintenance, and repairs on fire apparatus, emergency vehicles, heavy trucks, and related equipment.
• Perform basic mechanical tasks under the direction of senior technicians, shop leadership, or service management.
• Assist with removal, installation, and replacement of vehicle components, parts, assemblies, and related equipment.
• Support repairs involving mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and related vehicle systems within training level and assigned scope.
• Perform preventative maintenance services, including lubrication, filter replacement, fluid checks, fluid replacement, visual inspections, and related service tasks.
• Learn and apply proper repair procedures, diagnostic methods, tool usage, documentation practices, and safety standards.
• Participate in hands-on training, mentorship, safety meetings, and company-provided development opportunities.
• Maintain clean, safe, organized, and professional work areas throughout the shop, yard, and service facility.
• Properly care for company tools, equipment, customer vehicles, parts, and shop resources.
• Follow all safety procedures, PPE requirements, equipment-use requirements, and company policies.
• Communicate professionally with supervisors regarding work progress, questions, concerns, delays, or potential safety issues.
• Work collaboratively with technicians, service personnel, parts staff, leadership, and other internal team members.
• Demonstrate reliability, coachability, accountability, urgency, and a commitment to learning the fire apparatus and heavy vehicle repair trade.
• Regular and reliable attendance is an essential function of this position, including the ability to report to work as scheduled, maintain punctuality, and meet attendance expectations necessary to support business operations and team effectiveness.
• Display Safe Industries core values on a daily basis.
Required Qualifications
• Valid Commercial Driver’s License required at hire, or ability to obtain the required CDL and applicable endorsements within 12–18 months of employment, based on business need; must maintain an acceptable driving record and company driving authorization.
• Basic mechanical aptitude and genuine interest in the vehicle repair, heavy truck, fire apparatus, or related mechanical trade.
• Strong work ethic, reliability, coachability, and willingness to learn.
• Ability to follow instructions, ask appropriate questions, and work effectively in a team environment.
• Good communication, organization, and attention-to-detail skills.
• Ability to work safely in a fast-paced shop environment with tools, equipment, heavy vehicles, and changing priorities.
• Basic computer and technology skills sufficient to learn service systems, repair software, training platforms, and documentation tools.
• Ability to perform the physical requirements of the role, including lifting up to 50 pounds and working in a physically active environment.
• Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
• Ability to obtain a CDL Class B driver’s license within 12–18 months of hire, if required by business needs and role designation.
• Ability to comply with company safety procedures, PPE requirements, attendance expectations, and workplace policies.
Preferred Education, Certifications, and/or Experience
• Prior hands-on mechanical, shop, equipment, automotive, diesel, farm, fleet, welding, fabrication, or maintenance experience.
• Exposure to vehicle repair, fire apparatus, heavy trucks, diesel equipment, emergency vehicles, or related mechanical systems.
• Vocational, technical school, automotive, diesel, or related training.
• Basic understanding of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, or pneumatic systems.
• Experience using hand tools, power tools, shop equipment, or diagnostic equipment.
• Interest in pursuing long-term advancement into certified technician, advanced technician, or service leadership roles.

Ability to lift or move materials and equipment up to 30 pounds independently and more with appropriate assistance or equipment.
