JOB TITLE: Unit Clerk -- Emergency Department

POSITION PURPOSE: Provides office support under the supervision of the

Registered Professional Nurse for assigned areas according to established standards

and practices.

JOB RELATIONSHIPS:

A. Responsible To: Registered Nurse, Nurse Manager

B. Workers Supervised: None.

C. Inter-relationships: Is required to maintain a supportive relationship with

Registered Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse, Nursing Assistant, Physicians, and

ancillary departments.

Education/Training: High school diploma or equivalent. Experience in the medical preferred. On the job

training provided as needed.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

I. RECEPTIONIST ACTIVITIES

A. Receives, greets and directs patients, visitors, and hospital personnel arriving or calling the Department.

B. Acts as focus of communication regarding all patient care activities, patient location, and is able to provide

information and direction regarding the same.

C. Receives requests from patients and families and refers requests to nursing staff or appropriate hospital

personnel.

D. Observes hospital and department policy in assisting and directing patients, staff and visitors.

II.CLERICAL AND SECRETARIAL ACTIVITIES

A. Records and delivers messages for patients and staff.

B. Receives and routes phone calls appropriately following the hospital’s policy regarding the giving of advice

and information over the phone.

C. Assures adequate quantity of forms, materials, supplies and equipment inventory in the department.

D. Maintains assignment boards, bulletin boards and other communication sources.

E. Maintains a clean, safe and functional working environment in the patient care area and in the clerical area.

III. PATIENT RECORD/CHART ACTIVITIES

A. Initiates, assembles, and maintains charts for all patients in the department. Has working understanding of

the T-System.

B. Assists as requested regarding all forms, requisitions and communication necessary to complete physician’s orders.

C. Assists in Records and charts for clinical data as requested such as vital signs and similar patient information receives from nursing staff and medical staff.

D. Files diagnostic and laboratory reports in appropriate patient chart.

E. Maintains the patient record in appropriate, functional order and monitors the location of the chart at all

times.

F. Reviews the chart for completion on discharge of the patient and separates chart for distribution to

appropriate department.

G. Has good working knowledge of CPSI.

IV. EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT STATIONARY

A. Knows location and understands the purpose of all stationary.

V. OTHER DUTIES

A. Communicates all pertinent patient care information and general environmental information to the nursing

staff. May shadow, train and assist nurses/doctors with very basic care, such as checking vital signs—

under their direct supervision.

B. Attends Inservices education programs as assigned to learn new forms, procedures, developmental skills, etc.

C. Initiates and prepares patient charges.

D. Participates in shift report.

E. Serves as patient advocate keeping patients abreast of ED activities when treatment is delayed.

F. Break down of record.

G. Assures completion of the ED record.

H. Familiar with equipment and supplies in the ED.

I. Can operate radio equipment.

J. Seeks to meet the needs of guests and patients of all ages (neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric).

K. Required to review and adhere to hospitals legal compliance policies. Any apparent violation of the

hospital’s policies must be reported to his/her supervisor or the Compliance Officer.
