Job Description

The Town of Penetanguishene is a picturesque bilingual community with a population of approximately 10,000 located on the southerly tip of beautiful Georgian Bay. We are currently seeking a Winter Road Patroller (Weekend Night Shift) with a valid DZ Driver’s Licence to join our Public Works Department for the 2026 – 2027 winter season.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Under minimal supervision, patrol Town roads during the winter season for road conditions and other hazards to ensure that the roads are safe and in compliance with Provincial Minimum Maintenance Standards. This position will also monitor changing weather conditions.
  • Perform minor maintenance tasks related to vehicles and equipment. Conduct daily vehicle inspections and record deficiencies.
  • Under the direction of the Roads Supervisor, respond to complaints and requests for service from the public, other departments, and Council.
  • Operate a snowplow, sidewalk plow, front-end loader, sander, and tandem truck to remove snow and ice from roads and sidewalks, as required.
  • Operate a street sweeper, backhoe, shovel, pick, broom, truck, snow blower, bucket truck, hot-patch trailer, chipper, chain saw, power hand tools, sewer camera, locating tools, rental equipment and various loaders and trackless attachments, as required.
  • Repair asphalt and pave surfaces by hot-melt patching, chips and coal or masonry and cement work.

Required qualifications:

  • Secondary school completion
  • Must hold a valid and unrestricted DZ Driver’s Licence
  • Ability to operate multiple but related pieces of equipment and has excellent driving skills
  • Excellent organizational, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Current First Aid and CPR Certification would be considered an asset
  • Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety related legislation and practices is required
  • Chainsaw Licence would be an asset

Compensation:

The rate of pay for this position is currently $26.35 (2025 rate) per hour plus 4% vacation pay. This is a temporary, seasonal contract position from November 2026 to April 2027 covered under CUPE, Local 2308.05. Reason for vacancy: Seasonal Contract

Working conditions:

This is a temporary, seasonal contract position. The successful candidate will work Friday to Sunday, 7:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., from November 2026 to April 2027. The working environment for this position contains minimal risks or discomforts which require additional safety precautions. Conditions include frequent exposure to extreme temperatures.
