Job Description

POSITION OVERVIEW: (non-exempt)

Performs and participates in decontamination, cleaning, assembling, sterilization, storage, and distribution of reusable instrumentation and equipment.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Central Sterile Technician certification preferred, or willingness to obtain within two years of employment
  • Experience preferred, but will offer on-the-job training

ACCOUNTABILITY:

Reports to Perioperative Manager and Perioperative Assistant Nurse Manager

DIRECT REPORTS:

None

POSITION-SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS:

  • Cleans and decontaminates surgical instruments and other medical equipment following Manufacturer’s Instructions for use and facility policies and procedures, including following proper Standard Precautions.
  • Inspects and verifies instrument and equipment function properly, requisitions for equipment maintenance, repair or replacement, and removes defective equipment.
  • Assembles, packages and sterilizes medical devices following manufacture’s recommendations and established procedures.
  • Maintains and documents the decontamination/sterilization procedures to include quality assurance in the appropriate logs and books.
  • Returns supplies and instruments after cleaning and processing to appropriate departments within the facility.
  • Operates cleaning and sterilization equipment according to manufacturer’s recommendations and facility policy and procedures.
  • Assists in maintaining peri-operative supplies, equipment, and linen/inventory.
  • Cleans, restocks, and checks outdates according to routine logs.
  • Assists with the receiving and handling of loaner instrumentation from company representatives.
  • Effectively communicates with physicians, staff, co-workers, and equipment vendors.
  • Proficient writing skills for effective communication and accurate documentation of log and record books.
  • Proficient in basic computer skills required for resourcing necessary guidelines and Manufacturer Instructions for Use. Ability to create and edit documents in Word and Excel.
  • Other duties may be assigned as necessary to facilitate the functions of the department and hospital.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Works in a well-illuminated, climate-controlled environment
  • May come in contact with hazardous chemical or treatment modalities
  • Possibility exists of exposure to communicable diseases
  • Involvement in inpatient care may result in unavoidable work-related illness or injury
  • Work environment is comfortable, with minimal exposure to physical hazards
  • Moderate to loud noise environment when machines/equipment in use
  • Involvement in checking in/moving of supplies may result in unavoidable work-related injury
  • Must be constantly alert for patient/family emergency situations
