Job Description
Job Summary
Under general supervision of the Insurance Authorization Supervisor, performs clerical and general office work of moderate difficulty, assisting patients and guarantors with insurance questions, and works hospital and office procedures pre-certification. Performs duties of obtaining authorizations, referrals, account payment questions and collections for services.
Performance: Position Specific Essential Functions
Data Entry
- Accurately update patient records with patient demographics, insurance information, and related information. Meets productivity goals set by management on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis.
Patient Communication
- Contacts patients to secure insurance information, account payments, and resolve related matters. Meet with patients to discuss account balances, credits, and payment methods. Answer insurance-related questions. Provides directional and other information to patients, visitors, and others.
General Clerical Duties
- Answer telephones, messaging service, direct calls and take messages. Check voice mail and returns calls.
Payment Collection
- Accepts copays and payments. Calls patient to collect estimated amount for procedures prior to the date of service. Meets collection goals set by management on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis.
Communication with Insurance Providers
- Contacts insurance companies to obtain hospitalization, surgery, and office procedures pre-certifications; discusses insurance and claims matter with insurance company representatives.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
- Tends to learn new skills quickly on his/her own AND apply them both quickly and effectively to work situations. Identify work-related problems with possible resolutions, and implement an appropriate solution in a timely manner. Establishes effective, positive working relationships with management, staff, patients, providers, customers, vendors, and managers and provides support to other staff members and management.

Qualifications
Education
- Preferred
- High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent
Experience:
- Required
- One or more years of experience in an Office setting
- Preferred
- One or more years of experience in Medical Billing/Insurance Authorization
- Knowledge of Medical Terminology
- One or more years of experience in Cash Handling
