Metal Finisher in Ormond Beach, Florida at Germfree Laboratories Inc

Job Overview: The Metal Finisher is responsible for finishing the metal surfaces of Germfree's biosafety cabinets, laminar flow equipment, and stainless-steel laboratory furniture to meet exacting cosmetic, sanitary, and dimensional standards. This role grinds, deburrs, blends, and polishes welded seams and fabricated components so that finished equipment meets the smooth, cleanable, corrosion-resistant surface finishes required for regulated laboratory and biocontainment environments.

Responsibilities and Duties:

• Grind, sand, blend, and polish welded seams and fabricated metal surfaces — primarily stainless steel — to specified finishes (e.g., satin/#4, mirror/#8, brushed) using hand tools and powered grinders, belts, and buffing wheels.
• Deburr and smooth cut, sheared, and welded edges to eliminate sharp edges and produce safe, sanitary surfaces suitable for laboratory and cleanroom equipment.
• Inspect surfaces by sight and feel to detect defects such as scratches, dents, weld discoloration, pitting, or heat tint, and correct as needed.
• Read and interpret work orders and understand finish specifications to determine the correct finishing method and tolerance for each job.
• Select and maintain the correct grits, wheels, belts, and polishing compounds for each finish type and material thickness.
• Support surface preparation for passivation or other corrosion-resistance treatments on stainless steel components.
• Verify finished parts meet quality specifications using various tools and visual/tactile inspection; document results.
• Perform routine maintenance and cleaning on grinding, polishing, and buffing equipment; report equipment issues promptly.
• Immediately report non-conforming material or finish defects to the supervisor and quality team.
• Follow all safety procedures and use required PPE, including eye, hand, hearing, and respiratory protection.
• Collaborate with welding, fabrication, and quality teams to meet daily production schedules.
• Regularly stands, bends, and reaches for extended periods on the shop floor.
• Frequently lifts and moves materials and parts up to 50 lbs.
• Uses vibrating hand and power tools for extended periods; requires steady hand-eye coordination.
• Works in a manufacturing environment with exposure to noise, metal dust, and particulates; appropriate PPE is required and provided.

Education and Experience:

• 1–3+ years of hands-on experience in metal finishing, polishing, grinding, or a related metalworking trade.
• Experience finishing stainless steel is strongly preferred; familiarity with sanitary/architectural finish standards is a plus.
• Ability to read prints, work orders, and finish specifications; comfortable using calipers and other precision measuring tools.
• Working knowledge of abrasives, grits, buffing wheels, and polishing compounds appropriate to different metals and finishes.
• Strong attention to detail and pride in craftsmanship; able to consistently meet cosmetic quality standards.
• Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and meet production deadlines in a team-based manufacturing environment.
