History Teaching Fellow/University of Pennsylvania Boarding School Teaching Residency Master’s in Teaching Program for 2027-2028 in Lawrenceville, New Jersey at The Lawrenceville School

The Lawrenceville School, an independent boarding and day school located in central New Jersey, seeks dynamic individuals to join our community as a member of the Independent School Teaching Residency (ISTR) program, a two-year teaching fellowship offered in conjunction with the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education (PennGSE), beginning in June 2027.

We are now accepting applications for our two-year teaching fellowship program for 2027-2028 in History (a background in World or US history is required).

ISTR Fellows join their departments at Lawrenceville as fully engaged members of the faculty, teaching their own classes from the start. Fellows will fulfill co-curricular responsibilities (in athletics, performing arts, or publications) and residential duties, including being a member of a House team, chaperoning student events, and advising a group of students in year two.

Fellows are paired with a mentor teacher in their discipline who offers support and coaching through regular classroom observations and ongoing conversations about life at Lawrenceville. Regular meetings with the cohort of eight fellows provide collegiality and a strong peer group of early career educators.

Teaching fellows are an integral part of a vibrant campus life. Our community lives, works, and eats together, all in enticing proximity to the variety of attractions in Philadelphia and New York.

Teaching fellows are required to live in school housing (basic utilities included). They are provided three meals per day in the school dining center and have access to athletic facilities.

If hired by Lawrenceville, fellows join their cohort at PennGSE, where they complete a rigorous two year course of study led by PennGSE professors and academic leaders from other boarding schools in pursuit of a Masters of Education from PennGSE. Throughout the year, fellows participate in regular distance learning sessions and gather in person four times–in June, October, January and April–on the UPenn campus in Philadelphia and at various host school locations around New England.

Upon completion of the two year fellowship, recent graduates have found desirable teaching and coaching opportunities at both boarding and day schools across the country (including Lawrenceville), as well as have gone on to pursue additional advanced degrees or consultant work.

Essential Responsibilities

Teaching (two different preparations/courses)

• In year one, two sections in Fall term and three sections in the Winter and Spring
• In year two, four sections in Fall term and in either Winter or Spring, three in the other

Residential

• Supervise a student dormitory as a member of a duty team one night a week from 6:00 - 11:30 pm.
• Participate in Saturday programming as scheduled by the School.
• Provide weekend chaperone coverage up to twice per term.
• In addition, in year two, serve as an academic advisor to a group of six to eight students.
• Live on campus with a cohort of other fellows and participate in the residential life of the School

Co-Curricular

• Coach at least one season of interscholastic athletics
• Lead/Co-lead one additional term of co-curricular activity (athletic, performing arts, community service, student publications, experiential learning)

Other duties as assigned

• A Bachelor's degree in a relevant field
• Relevant experience working with young people
• Relevant experience in an area of co-curricular school life

For finalists, on campus interviews will be held between November 10th and November 17th. The Lawrenceville School will arrange transportation to and from campus as well as lodging during the interview. Interviews take place over the course of an afternoon/evening and the following day.

Salary

The annual salary range for this residential position is $25,000.00 - $27,000.00, plus a $5,000.00 stipend. Additionally, The Lawrenceville School pays approximately 80% of fellows' graduate school tuition.
