Project Engineer in Coden, Alabama at Master Boat Builders, Inc.

The Project Engineer will lead engineering integration and execution on assigned programs. This position is responsible for managing the overall development and maturation of Functional Design packages and 3D product models into controlled, build-ready production-engineering deliverables that satisfy contract requirements and align with the shipyard’s build strategy.

The Project Engineer will oversee the subcontracted production-engineering effort, support procurement and planning, and provide field engineering and production support throughout vessel construction, including the timely resolution of design, integration, and constructability issues.

1. Functional and Production Engineering

• Manage and review maturation of Functional Designs and 3D product model to ensure adherence to contract build specifications.
• Manage the development of the baseline design into shipyard-specific, build-ready production-engineering deliverables while maintaining structural and systems integrity and satisfying contract and specification requirements.
• Provide engineering support to procurement, including developing or reviewing purchase specifications and bills of material (BOMs) and assisting with the identification, organization, and creation of required components in the shipyard’s ERP parts catalog.

2. Subcontract Engineering Oversight

• Serve as the shipyard’s primary engineering point of contact for the subcontracted production-engineering firm and oversee its technical and schedule performance.
• Establish the engineering workflow, priorities, milestones, deliverables, and production-release schedule.
• Lead regular technical reviews of the 3D model and associated deliverables; document review comments, action items, and required corrections.
• Monitor subcontract engineering progress and promptly identify and escalate schedule, quality, scope, or resource concerns.

3. Change Management and Configuration Control

• Establish and maintain configuration control of the approved technical baseline.
• Evaluate, document, and track design changes, variances, deviations, and technical inquiries.
• Ensure approved changes are consistently incorporated into the 3D model, production drawings, bills of material, procurement data, and applicable as-built records.
• Coordinate with Program Management, Production, Procurement, Quality Assurance, and Document Control to ensure revised technical data is authorized, released, distributed, and implemented in a controlled and timely manner.

4. Quality, Compliance, and Production Liaison

• Verify or coordinate verification that revised engineering deliverables comply with contract requirements, applicable specifications, and approved shipyard standards.
• Serve as the principal technical liaison between the engineering subcontractor and the shipyard’s production teams to identify and resolve design, integration, and constructability issues.
• Ensure engineering deliverables undergo and complete necessary quality reviews before production release.
• Communicate approved technical dispositions to affected departments and support their implementation during vessel construction.

• Bachelor’s degree in naval architecture, marine engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or a related engineering discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and directly relevant experience.
• Minimum of eight years of progressively responsible engineering experience in shipbuilding, marine engineering, naval architecture, or a related field.
• Demonstrated experience with 3D ship models, production drawings, engineering design data, and configuration-controlled technical data.
• Experience interpreting and implementing government or commercial vessel designs.
• Experience working in a shipyard production environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with ShipConstructor and Navisworks 3D modeling review software.
• Experience with Integrated Master Schedules and engineering-production schedules.
• Experience overseeing subcontracted engineering services.

Work Conditions and Physical Demands

• Regularly alternates between office, shipyard, and vessel environments.
• Must be able to walk through active production areas and ascend and descend vessel and facility stairways and ladders.
• Must be able to use required personal protective equipment and safely access areas necessary to perform assigned duties.
