About This Position

Performs entry level complex work. Work involves maintaining the City’s vehicles and equipment in good working conditions. The Mechanic will be subject to after-hours call out for emergency situations. Works under general supervision with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgement. This position is considered an “essential employee” for emergency situations.



  • Work schedule is Monday – Thursday or Tuesday - Friday from 6:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (schedule is subject to change)
  • Performs and assists in preventive maintenance necessary to ensure the proper functioning of city vehicles and equipment, including trucks, diesel and gasoline, powered electric generators, construction equipment, police vehicles, street maintenance equipment, trailers, chain saws, weed eaters, hydraulic tools, etc.
  • Performs vehicle and medium-heavy truck diagnostics using scan tools.
  • Performs and assists in major and minor repairs on all air conditioning systems including automotive, medium-heavy, and heavy trucks.
  • Performs and assists in major and minor mechanical work, including but not limited to, repair and replace water/fuel pumps, radiators, alternators, differentials, timing chains, belts, hoses, fuses, valves, flat tire repairs and batteries.
  • Assists in engine, mechanical, and electrical problems and perform needed repairs on all city equipment.
  • Lifts heavy machinery and equipment.
  • Operates other City equipment as required, including driving a dump truck, skid-steer, and backhoe. No public road driving.
  • Picks-up and delivers equipment and vehicles to dealers and other outside vendors.
  • Documents work when Shop Foreman is out.
  • Assists and repairs small engines, industrial pumps, and lawn maintenance equipment.
  • Follows safety standards and guidelines.
  • Responds to service calls for assistance; retrieves or repairs vehicles and equipment in the field, as needed.
  • Responsible for always maintaining a safe work environment.
  • Operate a vehicle lift, tire changer, tire balancer, and all other shop tools including power and hand tools.
  • Responsible for cleaning and maintaining shop and equipment.
  • As an essential employee, this position is subject to after-hours call out for emergency situations which can include but not limited to icy weather, police department assistance or other emergency/disaster activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or its equivalent.
  • Minimum of one year related full-time work experience as a mechanic or a related field.

Required Certificates and Licenses

  • Valid Class "C" Driver's License from any U.S. State. Must be able to obtain a Texas license within 90 days of hire, per state law.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two or more years related full-time work experience as a mechanic.
  • One Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification.
  • Experience working for a government entity such as a City, County, or a State agency.


  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to follow detailed verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to balance time pressures, emergency situations, irregular schedules, frequent change of tasks.
  • Must deal with the public and team members in a courteous and diplomatic manner.
  • Must be knowledgeable of auto mechanics and the operation and repair of heavy equipment, hydraulic systems, diesel and gasoline engines, diagnose problems and repair vehicles, work with a variety of hand and power tools, perform paint and body work on automobiles.
  • Must be able to read wiring oil circuit diagrams.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
  • Analyze situations and adopt quick, effect, and reasonable courses of action.
  • Ability to operate various vehicles, equipment, power and hand tools, communication radios, dump and water truck, bucket lift truck, motor grader, skid-steer, backhoe, chainsaw, shovel, two-way radio, cell phone, computer, measuring devices.
  • Ability to work hours other than the regular daytime schedule such as shift work, on call, or emergency response situations (i.e., early mornings, afternoons, evenings, and late-nights shifts, and weekends).
  • Must be able to wear city provided uniform and city issued personal protective equipment, steel-toed leather boots, gloves, eye protection, head protection, safety vest, and ear protection.
  • Workers must be able to follow safety procedures and use safety equipment to ensure personal, public, and personnel safety.


While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear and taste or smell. The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 75 pounds. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds and push, pull, drag up to 150 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.


Working Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme cold; extreme heat; risk of electrical shock; explosives; risk of radiation and vibration. The noise level in the work environment varies between moderate, loud, and very loud.
