About This Position

Reports to Laboratory Manager or Director. Processes test orders. Performs specimen collection and all related tasks for processing the specimen. Coordinates activities of the phlebotomy/processing areas. Performs moderately complex testing bedside. Ensures all work activities are performed according to established policies and procedures.

Processes test orders:

  • Receives, sorts and routes test requests to proper location.
  • Generates drawing lists and collection pending reports from LIS.

Performs phlebotomy:

  • Collects venous, capillary, arterial samples using defined procedures.
  • Uses reference material to ensure correct collection.
  • Uses PPE as defined by procedure and policy.

Performs specimen processing:

  • Logs specimens into LIS.
  • Centrifuges, divides and relabels specimens.
  • Delivers specimens to testing department.
  • Operates the tube systems per policy.

Performs moderately complex Point-of-Care testing:

  • Follows procedures for specimen handling, processing, test analyses, reporting and maintain records of patient test results.
  • Performs analyses on proficiency testing material in the same manner as patient samples.
  • Adheres to the laboratory's quality control policies, documents all QC activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.
  • Performs responsibilities of testing personnel for moderate complexity testing as defined in CFR 493.125.

Coordinates phlebotomy/processing:

  • Organizes daily work assignments and coordinates timely specimen collection.
  • Investigates department-related problems for resolution.
  • Trains new phlebotomists and students.
  • Maintains performance notes on department staff. Maintains procedure books for phlebotomy and processing.
  • Assists with department schedule as assigned.
  • Assists with quality assurances tasks and projects.

Maintains work area, equipment and supplies:

  • Cleans and restocks work area.

Performs other functions to maintain personal competence and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the department by:

  • Support Hospital policies, procedures, and the terms and conditions of the union bargaining agreement.
  • Work with the Laboratory manager or designee to ensure assigned areas meet regulatory requirements, e.g. OSHA, CAP, State, Federal, Hospital.
  • Completing other job-related assignments and special projects as directed.
ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Associate complies with the following organizational requirements:

  • Attends and participates in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared.
  • Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department specific education within established timeframes.
  • Completes annual employee health requirements within established timeframes.
  • Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
  • Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR), and other certifications as required by position/department.
  • Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
  • Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
  • Complies with established organization and department policies.
  • Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

Education and Experience

  • The above level of knowledge, skills and ability are normally acquired through the successful completion of a high school diploma and a minimum of three years of phlebotomy experience. Certification (ASCP or equivalent) in phlebotomy is strongly preferred. Must have valid driver's license and reliable transportation. Qualifies as testing personnel for moderately complex testing as defined under CFR 493.125.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Demonstrate solid knowledge of medical laboratory procedures and testing systems.
  • Requires working knowledge of applicable state and federal regulations and accrediting agencies.
  • Requires technical knowledge of LIS and its applications.
  • Demonstrates interpersonal and verbal and written communication skills necessary to coordinate associates in daily operations and to interact effectively with physicians, patients, visitors and other contacts.

Working Conditions

  • Possible exposure to communicable diseases, hazardous substances, chemicals and other conditions common to a hospital laboratory.
  • Hours may vary.

Physical Demands

  • Requires the physical ability and stamina (i.e. to walk/stand for prolonged periods of time, push carts/wheelchairs up to 50 pounds, to position/lift patients at a maximum of 35 pounds unassisted, over 35 pounds requires assistance, provide CPR, etc.) to perform the essential functions of the position.
