The Structural Intern will join a structural engineering team supporting the design of bridges, culverts, and other structural elements for public infrastructure projects, working with DOTs, counties, municipalities, and other public agencies. Projects range from small culvert replacement designs to large multi-span bridge projects supporting critical transportation infrastructure. This position offers a direct opportunity to apply structural engineering coursework to real-world public infrastructure projects.
As a Structural Intern, the selected candidate will learn to apply industry standards, while assisting Senior Engineers in the preparation of structural analyses, bridge plans, and construction documents. The intern will build foundational proficiency in the structural analysis and design software used throughout the structural engineering practice.
Requirements:Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist with structural analysis and design calculations for bridges, culverts, and retaining structures.
- Support the preparation of structural plans, details, and quantity calculations for construction document packages.
- Help review shop drawings and construction submittals against project design specifications.
- Develop an understanding of client interests and help identify approaches to address client concerns in the performance of project work.
- Actively coordinate with internal and external team members across public infrastructure projects to ensure effective communication and project progress.
- Travel to project sites as necessary to gather field data and interface directly with clients and public agency staff.
Required Qualifications:
- Currently enrolled in an ABET-accredited undergraduate engineering program, preferably in Civil or Structural Engineering.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally with clients, management, and design team members.
- Willingness to learn in a flexible, cross-disciplinary work environment.
- Willingness to attend site visits and perform work in outdoor field conditions on occasion.
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Preferred Qualifications:
The following qualifications are preferred but not required for consideration:
- Relevant industry experience through engineering coursework projects or prior internships in structural or bridge engineering.
- Experience with technical software including AutoCAD, RISA, STAAD, or other relevant structural engineering tools.
