Job Description
Tandem Physical Therapy & Pilates
Tandem Physical Therapy & Pilates is growing, and we are building a new Strength & Longevity department.
We aren't looking for someone to simply step in and train clients.
We're looking for someone who wants to build this with us.
Our purpose is bigger than exercise. We want to help people move better, become stronger, stay active, and continue doing the things that make their lives meaningful. We believe people deserve to feel capable and confident in their bodies at every stage of life.
This is an opportunity to help us create the next part of that journey.
The OpportunityThis department is brand new.
That means you aren't walking into a program where everything has already been figured out. You'll work alongside our Physical Therapy and Pilates teams to help shape the programming, systems, client experience, schedule, and culture of Strength & Longevity at Tandem.
We are especially passionate about serving adults in their 50s, 60s, 70s and beyond.
We don't believe getting older means people should stop lifting heavy things or stop being challenged.
We believe they should be challenged intelligently.
We Believe in Real Strength TrainingAt Tandem, strength training means more than bands, tiny dumbbells, and exercises that are simply considered "safe for older adults."
We want to help people build meaningful strength.
Depending on the individual, training may include:
- Barbell training and foundational powerlifting movements
- Deadlifts, squats, presses, and loaded carries
- Kettlebell training
- Dumbbell training
- Progressive resistance training
- Functional strength and power development
- Appropriate higher-intensity training
- Balance, mobility, and conditioning that support—not replace—strength training
Our clients may have orthopedic histories, be navigating menopause, or be entering their 60s or 70s. That doesn't automatically mean they need an easier workout.
It means they need a knowledgeable coach.
We want someone who can assess the person in front of them, understand their history and goals, determine what they are capable of, modify when necessary, and then progressively load and challenge them.
The goal isn't simply to keep our clients moving.
The goal is to help them get stronger and stay strong for life.
You Won't Just Coach Clients — You'll Teach Them How to TrainA major part of this role is individualized strength programming.
Our goal is not for every client to need a Tandem coach standing beside them every time they exercise.
We want our clients to learn how to train.
You will teach clients proper technique, appropriate loading, exercise selection, progression, and how to adjust their training when necessary.
You'll develop individualized programs that clients can take with them to their own gyms and confidently carry out independently.
That means you aren't simply handing someone a list of exercises.
You're teaching them to answer questions like:
How much should I lift?
How do I know when it's time to increase the weight?
What should I do if something hurts?
How do I modify without abandoning strength training altogether?
How do I confidently use a barbell, kettlebell, squat rack, or other gym equipment?
We want clients to leave Tandem with more than stronger muscles.
We want them to leave with the knowledge and confidence to continue getting stronger for the rest of their lives.
For some clients, that may mean continuing to work with you regularly. For others, success may mean you've taught them enough to confidently walk into their own gym and execute the program you've created for them.
We see that independence as a win.
Orthopedic Knowledge MattersBecause of who we serve and our Physical Therapy background, many of the people you coach will come to you with a history.
That might include back or neck pain, arthritis, joint replacements, osteoporosis, previous injuries, or other orthopedic considerations.
We aren't looking for someone who is afraid to challenge these clients.
We are looking for someone who has the knowledge to understand when and how to challenge them safely.
You should understand the difference between appropriately protecting someone and unnecessarily limiting them.
Understanding Menopause and Women's StrengthWe are also looking for someone who understands—or has a strong interest in continuing to learn about—the physical changes associated with perimenopause and menopause.
You should understand the importance of strength training, maintaining and building muscle mass, bone health, appropriate loading, power, and maintaining physical capacity as women move through this stage of life.
We want women to understand that this chapter of life isn't a reason to expect less from their bodies.
It may actually be a reason to prioritize getting stronger.
What We're Looking ForOur ideal Strength & Longevity Coach:
- Has a strong background in progressive strength training
- Is comfortable coaching barbells, kettlebells, dumbbells, loaded carries, and other forms of meaningful resistance training
- Understands foundational powerlifting movements and how to teach, regress, modify, and progress them appropriately
- Can design individualized strength programs based on a client's goals, abilities, orthopedic history, and available equipment
- Can teach clients how to successfully carry out those programs independently at their own gyms
- Understands how to appropriately progress load, volume, intensity, and exercise complexity over time
- Has knowledge of common orthopedic conditions and their implications for exercise
- Can confidently work with adults who have previous injuries or orthopedic considerations
- Is knowledgeable about, or strongly interested in, perimenopause and menopause
- Can safely and confidently challenge adults in their 50s, 60s, 70s and beyond
- Is interested in strength, healthy aging, longevity, mobility, power, balance, and maintaining independence
- Communicates and collaborates well with Physical Therapists and other healthcare and wellness professionals
- Is dependable, proactive, flexible, and willing to take ownership
- Is excited about helping build something from the ground up
Because this is a new department, the schedule will evolve as we learn what our clients need and as the program grows.
We need someone who understands that flexibility is part of this opportunity.
In the beginning, coaching hours may vary based on client demand, and the schedule may include a combination of mornings, afternoons, or evenings. As we build the department together, we'll learn which times work best for our clients and develop the schedule around those needs.
We want to be transparent: we can't tell you exactly what this schedule will look like six months from now.
We are looking for someone who is comfortable with that.
Someone who can adapt as the department grows.
Someone who is willing to help us identify when our clients most need coaching.
Someone who sees the opportunity in building a position rather than stepping into one that is already completely defined.
This role requires patience, adaptability, flexibility, and an entrepreneurial mindset.
The right person won't just fill the schedule.
They'll help us create it.
Who You Are Matters Just as MuchKnowledge is important.
Kindness is just as important.
Compassion and kindness are part of who we are at Tandem, and we need someone who genuinely believes in both.
We are looking for someone who can teach a 65-year-old to deadlift while also understanding that the person standing in front of them may have fears, previous injuries, or years of being told what they "shouldn't" do.
You know how to build confidence without being reckless.
You know when to push.
You know when to modify.
You know when to add weight.
You know when to listen.
And you recognize when someone is capable of more than they think they are.
At Tandem, we want people to feel seen, known, encouraged, challenged, and cared for.
A great coach doesn't just give someone a workout.
They build trust. They build confidence. They build strength. And ultimately, they build independence.
This Position Is for Someone Who Wants to BuildYou won't walk into a department where everything has already been figured out.
You'll help us figure it out.
We want your ideas.
We want your expertise.
We want someone who will collaborate with us to develop the programming, systems, client experience, schedule, and culture that will define Strength & Longevity at Tandem.
We want to create something different:
A place where people can move from rehabilitation to real strength.
A place where someone in their 60s can learn to lift heavier instead of automatically being told to slow down.
A place where women navigating menopause can discover how powerful strength training can be.
A place where people aren't intimidated by the weight room because someone finally taught them how to use it.
A place where our clients eventually have the knowledge and confidence to walk into their own gym and know exactly what to do.
And a place where getting older doesn't mean expecting less from your body.
If you're looking for a perfectly established position with a completely predictable schedule and everything already figured out, this probably isn't the right opportunity.
But if you're excited about strength, longevity, teaching, healthy aging, collaboration, and building something meaningful from the beginning, we'd love to meet you.
Come help us build Strength & Longevity at Tandem.
