Primary Duty
The primary duty of the Operations Major is the management and leadership of the field operations of the company. This role directs the work of all field personnel, sets operational priorities, and exercises independent judgment and discretion on matters of significance to the organization. Management of the operation is the principal duty of this position at all times.
Essential Availability RequirementsThe following are essential, non-negotiable requirements of this position. A candidate or employee who cannot meet all of them does not meet the essential requirements of the role:
• Regular availability on weekends and overnight, not limited to emergencies.
• Ability to start early and stay late on short notice as operations require.
• Physical availability to serve as last-resort field crew, including for extended periods of a week or more during severe understaffing.
• No outside employment or commitment that restricts the availability described above.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities• Lead, direct, and hold accountable all field operations personnel; serve as the senior operational authority over field staff.
• Direct field staff and own day-to-day personnel management, including onboarding and corrective action; hiring and termination decisions are made jointly with executive leadership, with this role’s recommendations carrying significant weight.
• Ensure all patient care is delivered in compliance with South Carolina Department of Public Health (SCDPH) EMS regulations, company protocols, and applicable CMS Conditions of Participation.
• Own the accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of patient care documentation across the field operation, including compliance with the 24-hour completion standard.
• Monitor and drive operational performance, including field readiness, response and pickup performance, and service quality, coordinating with dispatch and scheduling, which are managed at the Chief level.
• Direct field-level safety and incident prevention, including safe vehicle operation, patient handling, and the reduction of preventable incidents and workers compensation exposure.
• Investigate operational and personnel issues and implement corrective action and process improvement.
• Coordinate with the Logistics and Supply Major on fleet readiness and equipment, and with the Training Major on field competency, Field Training Officer performance, and onboarding.
• Where the opportunity arises, support business growth by identifying and helping develop new service relationships, including facility contracts, event coverage, and vended or overflow agreements, in coordination with and subject to the approval of executive leadership. This is an incentivized opportunity rather than a primary duty of the role.
• Serve as the operational point of contact for field crews outside standard business hours, including nights and weekends, fielding and resolving crew calls, escalations, and operational issues as they arise.
• On an as-needed basis, and secondary to the primary management duties of this role, personally staff a unit to maintain service coverage. This includes response to after-hours vended calls and serving as the replacement of last resort when an employee calls out and no other qualified replacement can be secured. During periods of severe understaffing this coverage may extend for a week or more.
• Prepare and present operational reporting to executive leadership.
Operational Authority and Independent JudgmentThe Operations Major operates with significant autonomy and is expected to exercise independent judgment and discretion on operational matters, including personnel decisions, deployment, corrective action, and resource prioritization, consistent with company policy and South Carolina law. This role customarily and regularly directs the work of two or more full-time employees and its recommendations on hiring, advancement, and termination are given particular weight.
Qualifications• Current South Carolina EMT or Paramedic certification (Paramedic strongly preferred), or equivalent senior EMS operational leadership experience.
• Valid South Carolina driver license with a driving record acceptable to the company insurer.
• Minimum 3 to 5 years of EMS operations experience, including supervisory or leadership responsibility.
• Demonstrated knowledge of SCDPH EMS regulations, NEMT operations, patient care documentation standards, and fleet readiness.
• Proven leadership, personnel management, and decision-making ability in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
• Proficiency with operational and trip management systems (for example, RouteGenie) and standard business software.
• Bachelor degree in a related field preferred but not required; equivalent EMS operational experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.
Physical and Working Conditions• Ability to perform the physical requirements of EMS field work on an as-needed basis, including lifting and moving patients and equipment consistent with BLS and ALS operations.
• Field, station, and office environments, with exposure to emergency and patient care conditions.
Compensation Structure (Summary)• Base: salaried, exempt.
• Performance Bonus: annual bonus of 10% to 20% of base salary, measured against defined operational KPIs.
• New Business Incentive: margin-based incentive on qualifying contracts, events, and vended or overflow agreements sourced by this role, subject to approval and eligibility criteria.
• After-Hours Field Pickup: flat per-completed-call differential for vended calls personally crewed outside the standard 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. schedule.
Full compensation terms are governed by the employment agreement and applicable incentive schedules.
